Dumbest thing you've seen at the range?

Dumb? I think that sounds like an outstandingly wonderful thing!

I haven't seen anything terribly eggregious...YET...

I do get pissed off when I'm trying to shoot a round of trap and some yahoo shows up with zero knowledge of trap ettiquite. One time I was in a squad of 3 guys -- we were just about to start a fresh round. This dad showed up, plugged little Johnny into the line @ station #5, announced to the squad that he'd be manually "pulling" birds for us, then proceeded to tell Johnny to start shooting.

I walked away in disgust and told the dad to go learn the rules of trap and to let me know when he planned to do this again so I could leave the area pre-emptively.

Another time, there was a yahoo with a pump action shotgun who would fist pump and wave his gun around after each good shot. I told him to quit being a jackass and keep his gun pointed downrange at all times or leave the squad. Then the rangemaster showed up and gave him the same lecture.

One more thing that fits into the category of "dumb" or "***"?

I like to shoot my CZ 425 Scout 22LR with my boys. This is an awesome youth sized .22 with a 12" LOP and a 16" barrel -- perfect for young kids.

We usually shoot this gun stationary at targets 25 yards away. We also shoot standing at swingers 50 yards away.

Anyway, on the weekends, after we've set up our space at the 25 yard targets, there's invariably some 19-year-old who shows up with his Bushmaster or AK-47 and sets up shop directly to the left of us. The dude will pull out a high-powered scope and start blasting the crap out of a target 25 yards away. Needless to say, the 50 yard and 100 yard lanes next to him are empty. Also, it *never* occurs to such guys to set up one of the shell casing fences next to his station.

Why someone with a high-powered rifle would want to sight in at 25 yards is beyond me. Dumb. When a dad is doing target practice with two young kids & a .22LR and there are free stations all over the place, please give the dad a little breathing room!

In CA the rules are strange go to "http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/dwcl/12275.php" to see the Assult wepons list u cant sellem but if u register before the deadline ended u can own it unless they change their definitions like they did with the sks
also see "http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/regagunfaqs.php#1"

"If you did not register your assault weapon prior to the registration deadline, you must relinquish that assault weapon to a law enforcement agency. Failure to relinquish your unregistered assault weapon could result in arrest and a felony conviction." http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/regagunfaqs.php#16

I'm hoping for the day when I get to see the hot brass dance. Heard about it a few time, but have never been there.

it's the little things in life ...

I'm hoping for the day when I get to see the hot brass dance. Heard about it a few time, but have never been there.

Happened to me in Iraq. Some brass got caught between my IBA and my neck. It sucked.

I had a perfect scar of some 5.56 on my neck for a couple of years. I was kind of sad when it faded enough that it couldn't really be seen. Cool as it was, I wouldn't be in a hurry to get another one to replace it. (It would also be way less cool of a story.)

I had to do a variation of the brass dance.
I had my sunglasses on and a 9x18 brass got lodged between my face and my glasses; so, in a haste I grabbed my sunglasses and tossed them...downrange. Had to wait until the next ceasefire to grab them.

I hate A-holes who are at the range, don't know the difference between an AK and an AR and start acting like know-it-all blowhards and then rant about it after. Different strokes for different folks.

Not acting like you are at a tea party is NOT the same as doing something stupid.

Best/Worst story yet

I was at an isolated range one day, all by myself, when a car with with 3 young guys and a boat load of guns pulls in. I walk over and introduce myself and let them know that I am in no hurry and if they would like to go down and post their targets I will wait. They are very friendly and tell me to keep shooting. So, thinking they understand, I go back to shooting. As I am shooting I see one of them walking down range out of the corner of my eye. I make my weapon safe and walk over to talk to them and tell that we don't go down range when people are shooting. They say OK but weren't worried because I was a good shot so they doubted I would hit them.
Thinking they really do understand, I go back to shooting. A couple of minutes later I look over and one kid is out in front of the firing line, laying down, and his buddy is behind him, standing up, and they are both shooting. Again, I walk over to them and explain that this is not safe and we don't do that here. They seem to be getting a little aggitated with me telling them what to do but say that it won't happen again. I shake my head and walk away. About 20 minutes goes by without incident and it is time for me to reset my targets. I ask them if it is okay for me to go downrange and they say it is. Just because they have been so lax about safety to this point I ask that they put their guns down while I am foreward of the firing line and, again, they say okay. As I am walking downrange one of them picks up and fires his rifle, downrange. I turned immediately and drew my carry gun and ordered them to put their guns down. They went white, and I am sure that I was too, because I had no idea if they were shooting at me or not. The guys with the gun starts babbling about it being a joke, all the while holding the rifle. I repeat that I want him to put the gun down and I assure him that I am not joking. He finally puts the gun down and I ask them all to step away from their guns. I walk over to them and let them know that I am not happy and that I am leaving. I also tell them that while I am packing up they are all gonna sit there where I can see them, away from their guns. I try to get their names but now they realize that I am seriously pissed and I am probably going to the cops so they won't tell me.
Since I didn't know their their names and I also didn't really want to get them in serious trouble, I didn't go to the cops. I did however go the guy who pretty much ran the range. I let him know what happened and he seemed to know who the kids were. This wasn't the first time they had done something stupid. He said that he was gonna call one of the boys fathers and let him know what happened. I left my contact info with him incase it went any further. It didn't. I stopped going to that range after that. Years later I ran into the guy I talked to and asked if they were the kids he thought they were. He said they were and nothing more had ever come of it.

I turned immediately and drew my carry gun and ordered them to put their guns down.

Your lucky to be here typing this. Being an idiot at the range, and performing unsafe actions is bad. And you had every right to be mad, and to leave.

But, you pulled a gun and pointed at someone with the intent to shoot them. Big difference, in my opinion.

My opinion.

You misunderstand

When that gun went off I was not mad, I was "in fear for my life" I had no idea what their intentions were. When they said it was just a joke, then I got mad. I believed then, as I do now, that I was justified. Since I left my contact info and the father of one of the boys was told about what happened, I can only assume that others felt the same way.

If anything like that happens where you need to pull your gun, you should report it right away. Just for your own protection, they could have said you were the crazy one, who pulled a gun on them, and you would have been in court for a year trying to straighten it out.
I understand that you just wanted to get out of there, but you were lucky in more ways than one.

+100

I would have called local LE right then and there. Anytime your CCW is drawn "I" believe it should be reported and resolved by the authorities.

I can understand your POV, with fearing for your life, drawing, and then becoming angry and all, but at some point in that progression "I" would have been reaching for a cell phone as well.

Armchair,

The Army zeroes their M-16s/M-4s at 25 meters because the point of impact of the 5.56 round at that range from those firearms is equal to the point of impact at 100 meters. This situation could be a case of training if the individual was in the military. The lack of courtesy on the other hand well, I have to agree, that's just plain rude.

I saw a young guy who thought it would be fun to have his buck-05 soaking wet girlfriend fire off his .50 caliber Desert Eagle as her first time ever pistol shooting experience. It was painful to watch as she nearly buried the front sight in her forehead before dropping the pistol on the ground.

That crap happens all too often. I like to see my girl/buddies fire big guns and all, but I always make sure they are forewarned... I tell them, "hold on tight... Be ready for it... It kicks hard..." ... And then I tell them again.

I make sure people who haven't fired a particular gun before are ready for two reasons: 1) Safety, and 2) I don't want my gun being dropped like that assclown. I home the thing got scratched to high hell. I can't stand d-bags like that. Seems a lot of DE owners roll that way... :scrutiny:

I set up at the outdoor rifle range, where target changes happen about every 20-30 minutes, so it's important to keep track of where your shots land so you know how to adjust.

There was a kid two stalls down shooting a .22LR pistol.

Soon enough, I notice my target is starting to look like it got hit by a shotgun. There's only one dude who could be doing that... I walk over and ask him not to shoot my target. He was sheepish and mumbled sorry.

But he keeps doing it. Not only that, but he's shooting a pistol standing up in a rifle sit-down area, and his brass is showering me. I asked him to sit down and use his brass catcher shield, but he didnt listen.

When it finally came time to change targets, neither he nor his dad offered to replace my target. Classy folks.

When I bought my first gun(s&w 1911 .45), I took my best friend to the range to try it out. When we got their, I opened my ammo box and pulled out a brick of .22's. I left the .45's at home!! :banghead:

I know how you feel. One time I remembered the ammo, but left the magazines at home:banghead:
