Eastern Sports and Outdoors Show, Harrisburg, PA Boycott and Cancellation

I agree with Cabela's decision, but I will never shop there again for another reason. I had a Cabela's credit card, issued by their own bank, which I was never late paying, always payed more than the minimum due, and never had an unreasonable or overdue balance. In the credit crunch of 2009 they decided to stick it to me anyway. Jacked my interest rate up to 30% then a few months later canceled my account altogether. That's how they treat paying customers? I vowed to never give them another dime, and never will.

That was not Cabelas. That was the bank that issued the card. Had the same thing happen to me with a couple other bank cards.

Reed Exhibitions: Politics Over Money

The Eastern Sports and Outdoors Show (ESS) is one of the biggest in the world. It is (or was) held in Pennsylvania, and had upward of 200,000 attendees each year. On January 18th, word was received that the management of ESS decided to change the show rules at (for major shows) the last minute. They decided the political climate was right to prohibit Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) from the show.

The response was immediate and massive, amplified by overwhelming grassroots support. Vendors bailed, even if it cost them thousands, in protest of this blatant politicization of the show. Cabela's, one of the main sponsors, bailed almost immediately. The spontaneous boycott snowballed. By yesterday a quarter of vendors and celebrities had bailed, and more were announcing by the hour. Reed Exhibitions' response was curious. They could have ended the boycott and saved the show very quickly by announcing that the decision was a local mistake, or a misunderstanding. They chose to do neither, promising a statement from day to day, while not delivering one, as the boycott gained momentum and grew gigantic.

Finally, a statement was released today, saying that the show was "postponed". In practice, for a major show, this means "canceled".

Here is their statement. I find it difficult to interpret it as anything other than a statement that they would rather anger the majority of their American customers rather than retract their last minute change of policy:

“Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event’s historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families. In the current climate, we felt that the presence of MSRs would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests. This was intended simply as a product decision, of the type event organizers need to make every day.

“It has become very clear to us after speaking with our customers that the event could not be held because the atmosphere of this year’s show would not be conducive to an event that is designed to provide family enjoyment. It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing.

“ESS has long been proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of hunting and fishing traditions, and we hope that as the national debate clarifies, we will have an opportunity to consider rescheduling the event when the time is right to focus on the themes it celebrates.”
In effect, Reed Exhibitions would rather cancel the show than return to the status quo that existed before they made their inflammatory and political decision.

It appears that supporting the Obama regime's politics was more important to them than making money.

They are a large organization based in Europe. They manage over 400 shows a year, of which only 32 are in the United States. They appear to be on the "progressive" end of the political spectrum. While lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people often support armed self defence (Pink Pistols), separating them as a subgroup to be targeted for marketing is not indicative of a conservative organization. Reed Exibitions' issue of a press release on January 8th did just that.

Reed Exhibitions parent company, Reed Elsevier, announced that they would be exiting the Defense Exhibition business during the second half of 2007.

It remains to be seen if Reed Exhibitions will be retained by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to manage the Shot Show next year, as they did just two weeks ago.

I find the lack of media coverage amazing. We have everything necessary for a great news story. British company dabbles in American politics, perhaps trying to curry favor with the administration.

American grass roots response by boycott is immediate and massive. A huge show, with over 200,000 attendees is shut down because the Brits will not back down.

This in the middle (likely because of) some of the most hotly contested political issues in years.

Not a peep from the old media. Why is this not covered in the New York Times, ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR?

A cynical person would say that it is not covered because it hurts the Obama regimes' political agenda.

Hah! According to the author, you can't use ARs (or MSRs or whatever we're calling them) to hunt. Someone needs to tell all the people who've successfully hunted with them that that's not what those rifles are for.
I'm glad this show was boycotted and failed. We need unity right now.

Oh man I just read that a second time and it ticked me off even more.

Looks like it is time to start letting NSSF that they need to find a new organizer for the 2014 SHOT Show- one that is, that supports all firearms owners and enthusiasts, not just the ones that Zero & Co deem as being "acceptable". If they want our money, they damned well better support us- all of us.

E-mail sent. (to NSSF stating the above point of view in several well-chosen words) ;)

Statement made

I think it is wonderful that the big vendors like Cabela's and Smith & Wesson led the way on this.....and you are correct the "mainstream media" will be mum on this subject.....2013 is a different world, than 1994 was. The AR rifle is the most popular rifle sold in this country.....there are over a dozen manufacturers of that platform in this country, and an entire industry of accessory vendors has developed around it.
The people I feel bad for are the small guy's who exhibit at the show and depend it on for a large part of their annual revenue...and the surrounding community that benefits from the millions of dollars that are spent by the people attending the event.
A statement has been made, and it will not go unnoticed.

Time to find a new outfit to put on these shows.

Time to find an AMERICAN outfit to put on these shows.

Time to tell Reed to go to Hell and take the rest of the anti 2A jackals with them.

Excellent news. We all need to vote immediately with our wallets when businesses decided they'd rather cave to political pressure than serve their customers. It obviously had a huge impact on this event, in tandem with the vendor response.

Sent the following email to the NSSF:

"Would like to see you drop Reed Exhibitions as the promoter of the SHOT show due to their anti 2A stance at the Eastern Pa. Outdoors Show. In fact the use of an American Company with pro2A stances would seem only appropriate.

Regards,
Bob "

+1

Sent something similar as well.

Short term gains or long term victories?

well, success would have been if they'd reversed the ban and allowed black rifles to be displayed

Perhaps, but this is a stronger statement than the promoter caving to the pressure.

The MSM may not report this. It's all over my local news.

Link to several back-to-back posts in Activism containing local news stories

I do believe that the Democrat strategists and staffers for Senators and Representatives noticed what happened. This is a very strong statement.

Our local economy will take a huge hit from this. So will those retailers and exhibitors at the show.

However, when you tell your Congresscritter to oppose the AWB 2.0 and he or she responds with "I'm support the rights of hunters and sportsmen, but", you point this out to them.

We are all unified. Sportsmen and hunters did this. We have learned to stand united. That tired old appeasement they throw out won't work anymore. This is very strong evidence of it.

congratulations to the vendors

Congratulations to the vendors and sponsors that pulled out of the Pa sport and outdoor show in Harrisburg. I was going to attend, but now my plans have changed. Maybe we can find a American promoter to run the show and not censor the vendor displays. Hopefully this promoter will stay in England where he belongs. I was glad to see all the vendors unite even when the changes did not affect them. It cost many of them a lot of money.

I suspect Reed Exhibitions may have some civil liability when it comes to lost revenue considering they changed the terms of the agreement. Lots of hotels, motels, restaurants in addition to the vendors will feel the loss of income from Reed's decisions.

Wow, I'm loving the comments section! Is there any doubt WE are everywhere now?

Feinstein and Schumer, et al, wanted a final battle. What they seem to have gotten is a hill to die on. The battle is not quite going the way they'd hoped! :) Turns out there's a few of them and a LOT of us, and we're driven and active like never, ever before!

Most stores do not finance their own credit, its contracted to a financial company. There were a lot of new financial regulations imposed by the .gov over the last few years too as they work to "fix" the economy.

I used my Cabelas Rewards Visa to buy a Smith and Wesson :)

Yes, Cabelas didn't get any benefit from using my Visa card at that moment but I'll stop on the way down to the farm and look for magazines and ammo.

All the more shocking as this is an NPR site showing that some of their listeners - like myself - do not support the excessively left leaning agenda.

For a company that boycotted this show because of the organizer's gun control stand, they aren't quite as pro-carry as many believe. I checked into this while visiting one of their stores because there has been some confusing information on other forums about their carry policy.

Employees are not allowed to carry (not even those in the firearms department) on the premises, and if customers intend to unholster their legally carried firearm (OC or CC) to size a new holster or for some other reason, they have to unload it first outside the building, check it in with the firearms inspector at the front door to make sure that it is unloaded, and then be accompanied by a store employee because, while they won't interfere with our right to carry a holstered firearm (OC or CC) in accordance with state laws, they won't allow us to otherwise have a loaded firearm in the store.

So, it's great that they took this stand with this sports show, but they practice their own brand of gun control themselves in their own stores.

Don't like that one, myself, but the reasons for it are a bit more complex that just "we don't like it." Allowing/inviting employees to be armed as part of company policy opens them up to certain liabilities whether we understand why or not.

and if customers intend to unholster their legally carried firearm (OC or CC) to size a new holster or for some other reason, they have to unload it first outside the building, check it in with the firearms inspector at the front door to make sure that it is unloaded, and then be accompanied by a store gun runner because, while they won't interfere with our right to carry a holstered firearm (OC or CC) in accordance with state laws, they won't allow us to otherwise have a loaded firearm in the store.
Maybe re-read what you wrote there. If someone's carrying a holstered firearm, that's just fine with them. If someone's going to take it out and handle it, it MUST be unloaded and cleared (checked) ahead of time.

DUH! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY SHOULD BE DOING. That's exactly what our private shooting club requires as well when you enter the club house. And exactly what any gun shop should require (unless they can provide a safe clearing area in some bullet-proof part of the store.)

That's not some gross infringement. That's smart safety procedures and I applaud them for it.

Do NOT walk into an establishment and pull out your loaded carry gun! Guns in holsters are safe. Guns in HANDS are not safe. If you want to buy grips, holsters, or bring in a gun for trade or sale, UNLOAD IT FIRST. That Cabela's has an official policy on how that should be done is a FANTASTIC thing.
