im looking for a folder with a can opener built in the handle, not something you have to unfold.

like a regular folder, but just a notch built in the frame of the handle so you can just take it out and pop open a bottle without unfolding anything.

any ideas?

You want a bottle opener or a can opener? I've seen very small fixed blades with bottle openers, no "fixed can openers" ever though.

why not just carry a small keychain bottle opener ?

The Emerson folders with the wave feature work well for opening bottles , plus you can use many of the folders that have thumbstuds if the thumbstud has a ridge on it.

You could learn how to open bottles using a pen, or pretty much anything else similar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnOnQF91gVs Most pocket knife handles could be used for that, with no attachment necessary.

Cans can be opened in a few minutes with any flat, rough stone surface (concrete, asphalt, etc.). Press one end of the can against it firmly and rub like mad until the rim is ground down far enough to remove the lid.

thanks guys. i was thinking BOTTLE OPENER...don't know why i said can. it always seem i need one, and i already have my knife in my pocket and 1. don't want to carry a bulky leatherman 2. don't want to carry an "extra" thing, or 3. don't want a bottle opener on my car key ring.

i actually use that trick in the youtube video quite often...but have also had times when ive used it and broke the top of the bottle right off.

this type:

of opener in the handle, although i don't like that knife. something more like

my current folder:

with that little notch in the handle

With your current folder you could use the flipper where it sticks out to pry of a cap or you could probably grind out a groove similar to the one on the first knife you linked to and customize an opener in the knife you already have...

LOL...love the balisong bottle opener!

i also like the buck...im not so sure about that button...in the state i live just about everything is illegal to carry so i'd rather not have any buttons or anything.

thanks for the options guys

It's also not a button, it's a switch (well, okay, saying "it's a switch" to a police officer would be a bad idea, but you get what I mean). You pull it away from the blade, not push it in. Looks like Benchmade's Axis Lock patents expired.

Buck Redpoint

The Buck Redpoint has no spring to open or close the blade.

There is a thumb latch (or release lever if you prefer) that holds the blade closed and, after you open it, holds the blade open.

The round "toothed" edge at the back of the blade is used to rotate the blade open with your index finger while holding the latch open with your thumb. This mechanism is called "SafeSpin" (tm).

It's actually quite simple and kinda nifty.

Now, if I could only get them to make it without the stinking serrations, I'd buy two or three.

Unfortunately, most of their "outdoor sports" knifes have combo blades.

I managed to get a Short Revolution with a plain edge. Nice blade, by the way. Not properly a "folder" because it doesn't "fold shut" but rather the blade rotates into the handle and the carabiner/bottle opener rotates out into the position formerly occupied by the blade.

Thus, the knife closed is almost the same length as the knife open. Not terribly pocket friendly. Actually meant to hang on your gear by the carabiner clip. You can hang it from a belt loop, but then it's flopping around.

This is the one I have:

This shows the open/closed positions:

AG,

It's still a folder regardless of what's on the "tang". Think of it as a modification of the "peasant" friction folders with their tang "tail".

BTW, the Buck design on the Revolutions isn't anything new. Prior incarnations of wheel openers were the awful "Colt" Revolver and better European designs. The very earliest incarnation of wheel openers and spring loaded in-line pin locks I ever saw was a knife made by Denise LeMaire (sp?) of Quebec back around 1989 (far ahead of the Axis lock).

Ah, So.

I stand corrected.

A folder it is.

Yeah, now that you mention it, it is rather like a sophisticated take on the peasant knife (albeit with a locking button).
