I've seen .458 SOCOM all over in forums, but I can't gather too much info about price (because I don't reload), performance, range, the purpose of its development, and other important info on the cartridge. Tell me all you know about it with positive and negative reviews.

It offers some potential for someone who insists on hunting with the ar15 platform. I am not knocking those who choose to do so but it seems that there are easier ways to go about this.
If you don't reload I believe your cost is something like $1.50 or $2.00 a round to start with . Even if you reload your cost is going to be steep due to the high cost of .458 bullets which are 2 or 3 times a similar type of 30 caliber.
I love the AR15 but seems that someone who wants a big whoomping 45 caliber rifle for hunting or just for giggles might consider one of the marlin lever guns . Factory ammo, more power, available components for reloading, choice of short guide gun or full sized gun , and better resale . Of course you have a lever gun vs. a semi

    1. It is designed for the AR15 platform.

    2. Other options for big bore in the AR15 include the .50 Beowulf and the .45 Bushmaster.

The .50 Beowulf and .458 SOCOM have been around a while and the .45 Bushmaster is the new kid on the block (havn't seen reviews yet but it seems to be centered around a faster lighter .45 bullet with the SOCOM capable of much heavier bullets).

    .458 SOCOM info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.458_SOCOM
    .50 Beowulf info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.50_Beowulf
    .45 Bushmaster info: http://www.bushmaster.com/

Beowulf is the straight-walled .50 rounds next to a .223 below. The .458 SOCOM is the bottle0neck next to a .223 below. Couldn't find a pic of the .45 Bushmaster yet.

This pic (form the article "More Punch for the AR15" on my website) shows the 5.56mm M855, .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf and .499 Leitner-Wise:
