Elephant Black Powder

Trying to get it to post the picture, but it keeps coming up as an error. I know that this hat WAS used for a memory for a friend. Looking at it, with the exception of some age from sitting on a shelf, there's no wear to it.

Ain't no sayin'..., by the time my group bought Elephant, it was some of the dirtiest stuff we'd ever worked with. :what: It was a good deal cheaper than GOEX, which is why we bought it, as our members would normally burn a can over a weekend. Diamondback powder was made the same way (Im told in the very same plant) and it too was uber dirty. Standard GOEX is much better. Currently I am trying Graf & Sons powder which is made in Germany. I can look around for a metal can for you.....I doubt I will have one but you never know.

I shoot competitive black powder and the best stuff I've seen available in the US at the moment is Old Eynsford (Goex product) and Swiss. Both have minimal fouling for black powder and shot velocity is pretty consistent. Swiss is the top choice, but OE is right behind it.

Thinking back on Elephant black powder.
It always shot well for me.
They've been out of business for a while.
Anybody know a source of cans?

I'm a rookie in black powder use myself, only about 5 years in 50 plus of shooting and handoading smokeless. One pound of Goex in the beginning and the rest all Grafs own brand, somewhere in the neighbor of 10 pounds a year or so. As a casual revolver shooter of paper targets never saw the need to shoot the more expensive brands. In the 2019 order to Grafs I'm going to include a couple of pounds of something different just so I can say I know the difference.;)

After reading this thread I remembered I had a can of this stuff in 3f (2001 dated can) squirreled away. I took my Lyman imported Remington .36 Navy(Uberti) to range to burn it up. 20 grains produced a pphhuutt sound and it has to be the weakest BP I have ever shot.

I've shot just about every BP available to man, but prefer Goex, I used to like the Elephant brand but like was mentioned earlier the quality went down hill, rather rapidly. Shuetzen (spelling) is an excellent powder but hard to get as is Swiss. I even had a Chinese BP called KIK. Now I'll bet that is one that was never heard of before.

I bet everyone here has heard of Kik powder. But I didn't know it was made in China? What the heck do Chinese know about black powder???:confused::rofl:

The brand is no more, but the plant is still in operation and still making pretty dirty BP..., you can find it under the name "Diamondback".

LD
Dirty, relatively speaking, or dirtier than most.;) I could find only one retailer, a fireworks and blasting supplies site, and that in only Cannon, 1 and 2 F, in limited supplies.

My impression is that has happened with more than one maker: they drop out of the gunpowder market, but produce black powder for fireworks and blasting. To stay in the gunpowder market requires a high quality product. In fact blasting powder (to move stuff more than to break it) is deliberately weaker than gun powder often with a lower ratio of KNO3.

I have shot black powder off and on since the 1970s. Kinda got coerced into using BP substitutes (Pyrodex, Triple Se7en). I still have cans of Elephant and Goex. My last BP purchase was Swiss.

(I repressed making a "heard of Elephant" joke. Give me some credit.)

My understanding (operative word) is that there were several changes within grade during the time Elephant was here. We did chronograph Elephant FFg in 50 caliber cap lock rifle. We found that, charge for charge, it was slower than Goex FFg. Shot OK. I still have a supply of Elephant FFFg that I use in cartridge guns for informal matches and the like. Elephant FFFg makes plenty of smoke with 93grs. in a 45-110. Again, my understanding is there was an explosion in the plant. A decision was made not to reopen. CRS is kicking in more these days.

In Oct., 2016, someone posted how much they liked Diamondback powder and that they purchased it from an outfit named Crater Fireworks.
As mentioned Diamondback was made by the new owners of Elephant.
When I clicked on the link it brought me to a page that said "... does not exist anymore" & "site map".
But clicking on the photo twice brought up contact information and a price list for various powders including limited quantities of Elephant and Diamondback.
The Elephant is listed as Meal D and 7FA, which 7FA = 4F without the graphite.
They also listed Diamondback 2FG sporting powder.
Perhaps it's worth an inquiry to see if any is left.
