Howdy,

I’m de-sporterizing a 1943 BSA Enfield no4 mk1, but having trouble with the middle barrel band fitting. I’ve tried light sanding and rubber clamps, but there’s about a 1” gap that I can’t seem to close. Any ideas?

Duster340 is correct that a sling swivel (e.g Numrich Part 42 lists as Sling Swivel, Front (Centerline) Product 486980 goes in between the gap. I am wondering if you do not have a P14 middle band (aka American Enfield). Without a picture of the band itself, it is difficult to tell but the P14 is more an true oval while the No. 4 Mk. 1 should look like this example: https://www.brpguns.com/1-band-lower-new-old-stock/
No. 3 rifle's middle band aka P14 looks like this example: https://www.brpguns.com/1-band-no-3/

Also, depending on your stock and the middle band, as the war went on, stampings replaced milled and forged materials and middle bands do differ in thickness and were inlet into the stock that they were installed on but unless you have a new stock and new handguards, it should not vary that much.

Here is a picture of the band I have. I know the sling swivel goes between, but the screw is not long enough to bridge the gap.

Pretty sure the band pictured is for a P14 aka 1917 Rifle in the U.S. flavor. If you find markings such as an E, R, or W, then it is certainly not for a No. 4 rifle. Here are pictures from Liberty Tree Collectors website

Here is a picture of the No. 4 Mk. 1 barrel bands from the same source

Similar in design but thinner and the dimensions are different.
