Opening scene for a movie.

Scene starts in some big city full of crime. The gangs are in charge, blah, blah, blah. A group from one gang are beating up on a few people, for reasons that are probably not related to the story line, just an excuse for them to get wasted.

One of the banger's cars nearby blows up. This brings our attention to the good guy. approaching from down the street. He cracks open the M79 grenade launcher he's holding, tosses away the brass, and loads another round. The bangers are looking for revenge, and leave off the poor fools from the beginning of the scene to head for him. The head one starts throwing slang and stuff at him. "Yo man, that was my car! Now you gonna get it good." Whatever.

The GG raises the launcher again, and fires. The round is a canister load, and turns the approaching punks into dog meat. He gets to the victims, loading another canister round. This one goes from the hip into the gang-banger that tries to shoot him. The rounds from the Glock or whatever don't phase him through the body armor he's wearing under the grenade vest, which is one of few things visible inside the trench coat he's wearing. The second canister load turns the last banger into a splatter on the wall, something that's not seen. We take the oppurtunity to get a good shot of the hero in his body armor and trench coat shooting the M79 from the hip(with a load like that, how can you miss? don't forget this is a movie we're talking about).

He slowly, deliberately loads an HEI round while a police car comes screeching around a corner. One of the fools on the ground says something like, "Thank goodness, the cops!" while helping one of his buddies. The hero just raises the M79 again and blows the car, and the corrupt cops inside, to flaming BBQ. The others are just standing there staring at him. He turns to them, cracking the launcher open again, and tosses the empty brass. The clatter it makes hitting the ground and the burning of the cars are the only sound.

The camera moves to a wider view while he reloads and pulls up one of the guys, leading them off to the escape, completing the opening scene.

This might be while the credits are taking place, while rap plays in the background or something. Don't know the next scene yet. Or even what the whole movie's about. The scene just popped into my head, and I had to get it down. What do you guys think?

I like the use of the M79, the rest has the flavor of Hollywierd. That's just my opinion.

Have the Good guy pack a 4 inch S&W 500 and do speedy fast reloads, (wonder if anyone makes moon clips for he 500) and show the same gun fighting tactics as taught at some of the better shooting schools. That would get my butt in a seat quick.

Uhm...canister rounds from an M79? How far out of the barrel do they arm, and what primes them? Contact?

Just askin...

Other than that, it sounds like some real freudian DeathWishCommandoRawDealPredatorMIAAbovetheLaw SuperPenisGun2000 type stuff. And the trench is soooo Columbine '99. All you need now is hot bimbos and some Karikidoninjitsufu action (don't forget compund joint fractures.) Do they even make movies like this anymore that don't go STV?

But hey, I loved that stuff when I was 13.

My favorite scene in any action movie-

Everything has gone straight to hell in a handcart. No other option but to die.

BANG!

Pan to the guy/girl nobody thought could possibly wield a gun, shaking like a leaf, because he/she has no training, and is scared to death.

There's your hero, ladies and gentlemen. Keep the one-liners, grenade launchers,
and gas-bag courage.

I'll take that trembling, freaked out kid over your grenadier every time.

"SuperPenisGun2000 "

I believe I saw some of that for sale on the internet. Supposed to have extra vitamin C, too. ;-)

While I'm not one to criticize a movie for over-the-top violence, it does help to have a realistic and sympathetic protagonist. Sneaky touched upon this theme to some degree, but a believable protagonist can have some guts from the outset.

John McLane from the first Die Hard movie is one of my favorite action heroes. He is believable because he has police training (hence firearms skill) and getting down and dirty is familiar to him (NY cop). However, he also demonstrates self-doubt, pain, fear, and sheer terror. Striking a balance between ability and vulnerability is key.

Writing a story based on the action is fun, but in my experience it will not yield good results. Write a story based on characters first. Describe their drive and motivation, and convince the reader/audience that the reason for their animosity is valid. If you can make your audience sympathetic to both the protagonist and the antagonist, and perhaps blur the line between them, then you're on your way.

Then, once you have a logical and believable back story and characters that act like real people, you can tailor action sequences that satisfy your desire for bloodlust (to be frank) and that create much more compelling suspense and adrenaline.

Some good points, this was just a prototype for a scene. It doesn't even have a story attached.

You're thinking HE, not canister. Canister basically turns it into a 40mm shotgun. It's a disentegrating canister filled with buckshot that's loaded instead of a shell. I've since come up with a character based on this, I need to talk with people who know of the universe he'd be in first though.

Don't M-79s kick like a mule? I would think that shooting from the hip would be a good way to bruise something (IIRC from RONIN, they had the character brace himself before using the bloop gun). Cars don't just "blow up", and if they do, the blast wave and shrapnel is going to level anyone nearby. Also, just strolling down the street letting guys shoot you isn't gonna impress anyone but 10 year olds.

If you want to create GRIPPING gun fiction, let HEAT be your inspiration, not COMMANDO. But if you wanna write hollywood action, you are on the right track :) Well, everything except getting himself shot, only the Terminator lets himself do that!

Come on...
Admit it...

You still love that stuff. :)

I'll start - hey I still love that stuff and I'm 53. Don't we all have a little hero-wannabe buried somewhere in our psyches somewhere?

Real Life - as great as it is - can sometimes be a bit boring. Good fantasy and heroic fiction is fun. That's what it's for - a break from the real. Enjoy!

Ok you got me. ;)

But I will take Ronin/Collateral/Way of the Gun/Bourne over Commando/Seagal/VanDamme/Rambo.

That over the top cinematic style stuff really only works in two settings, Sci-Fi, (Like Terminator/Matrix/Aliens,) or Parody, (Action Jackson/I'm gonna get you Sucka/Sledge Hammer.) Trying to do it with a straight face doesn't work.

Enter the good guy (gun fiction)

An M-79 Round arms at approx 5-7 Meters out of the Barrel, has a kill Radius of approx, 15 Meters, Recoil is moderate. Hollywierd would call it an AK-47. Saw one on Auctionarms, starting bid was $5500.00 several Months ago.

HA!, this was MCT, SOIlite for pogues and Wingers. They gave us 3-5 orange smoke rounds for the 203, and screamed at us about how worthelss we were for not being able to hit the target, (but didn't bother to tell us how to fix it.) After realizing how pointless the "training exercise" was I quickly abandoned the "6-8 burst" on the other weapons and just fired all 25 rounds off. Can't hear a grunt screaming with all the racket that a Mk-19 makes. I really hated 03xx's for a while after MCT.

Humm, I don't remember being taught by grunts at MCT. All our instructors were from non 03 ranks. Ended up being a scout and had to use most of those MCT lessons anyway.

Anyway, I did go to 203 gunner school, and the best way you get rounds on target is to shoot by feel and lose those crappy sights. Once you get the Mark I Mod I eye ball calibrated, most can get rounds into a ten meter target out to 200 yards. Kinda fun watching 25 203's volley fire at an old tank hull and most get steel on steel flash.

a bit hollywood-ish, but i like it.

the plot should be basically gg vs. bg, the GG's eventually ganging up, and this is all in the year like 2500 when everythings gone to hell with smoking ruins and tall buildings, but there is a rumoured place where there still is feilds and rivers, and in the end they find it. (hey, that sounds kinda cool...)
