L3 Communications EOTech Issuing Refunds For Holographic Weapon Sights

Last month, L-3 Communications was sued by the US Government in Federal Court for fraud regarding performance of their line of EOTech Holographic Weapon Sights. The same day, L-3 settled with the US Government for $25.6 Million. This suit comes on the heels of a USSOCOM Safety Of Use Message for the sights because of Point of Impact shifts in extreme temperatures as well as other performance issues.

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have ripped one off my rifle in frustration and tossed it in the nearest trashcan.

their long list of shortcomings hasn't exactly been a secret. Go back and read the AARs from classes like pat rogers' carbine class. I'll bet 8 out of 10 of his AARs over the past 10 years include something like "...another eotech goes down on TD1...replaced with loaner aimpoint...."

Yes I always wondered why SOCOM bought so many of them. Knowing the Army as I do, I suspect that it had a lot to do with having something "different" from the rest of the Army.

In the late 70s airborne units were wearing Vietnam era camouflage jungle fatigues. In 83 when the BDUs were fielded in quantity many of them started wearing the old OD green Vietnam era jungle fatigues. I guess since the big army was wearing camo now they had to have something to set them apart....

Brownell's has completely wiped them off their catalog interestingly- guessing it's b/c of their return policy.

From a performance standpoint, I *really* liked my Eotech 516. The big glass and the reticle design made it very fast even from oddball positions, while the sub-MOA dot was great for precision, at least as far as 1x optics go.

Hence, I was really disappointed when my diffraction grating delaminated, making the reticle go faint if you looked through a certain portion of the window. Eotech fixed it for free, and fast, but I eventually sold it. I could see myself getting another someday, but it'd be contingent on fixing the reliability issues.

Mine never had battery contact troubles, though, just the delamination issue.

I don't know, but I think I'm about to find out.

I have a 511-A65 I bought new on 6-18-06 for use on a HD rifle.
I love the reticle, and it has always held zero in hot & cold weather just fine.

But it runs battery's down turned off in the gun cabinet every two months.

So I leave the battery's out of it.

Which makes it worse then useless for a HD rifle.

I went round & round with them years ago about the dead battery's, and all I got was that's the way they work, and an offer to send me some battery's.

I didn't want free battery's.
I wanted it to work when something went bump in the night!!!

I think I will fill out the form tomorrow and see if I can get my $339.00 back on a 9 year old one!!

This is one of the better links- the specific shortcomings in the socom letter

Previously advertised as "parallax free", the company now admits to a potential 4 MOA error when changing cheek postion at 70 degrees, and up to 6 at just above freezing.

That reticle error is independent of the varying degrees of reticle drift which are temperature dependent and don't return to zero.... So depending on the temp., you could potentially have more than 10MOA error! Man what a stupid thing to have done. This is like the gun industry's version of VW's mileage snafu.

I like mine though it's useless in any kind of HD capacity unless you're a stickler for frequent battery replacement. I haven't noticed any change in MOA with mine- but I've used it in a relatively narrow temperature range and I haven't done anything other than shooting it at range off hand and sitting. A real shame because it's a nice product otherwise

well that sucks... I have one, never had any issues over the years. Dont recall how much I paid for the darn thing thou. Hopefully the receipt is in the box.

I found my box but no receipt. Mine is a 512, I bought it about a year before they came with the plastic case.
Anybody got an idea of cost from that era?
I like the sight and haven't had any of the issues, not using in combat but it's not on a safe queen either.

They refunded $415 on my uncles 511.

I'm torn. I like mine. It works. But, I could dump it on EOTech and get something else.
Thats the same spot I'm in.

But Battery life was never as claimed.

I could dump it?

But, there is nothing else in the $350 price range I like better.

The EOtech 65MOA with the small dot in the middle is the best I have ever shot for speed & accuracy.

I've carried on on my work rifle for many years now. I've actually been pretty happy with the sight, and never really had any issues. This article is a little bit concerning though. My department does authorize Aimpoints, and I currently have an Aimpoint on one of my other rifles. Hmmm.

If I had a battery problem like that, I'd send it back for the refund.

There is only one other red dot similar in the reticle that I like and it's made by Leupold. But it sure has a tiny lens to look through compared to an EOTech.
