I have a POF 416 that has an Eotech mounted on it and i really like the setup. Before choosing the Eotech, i did try the ACOG with 4x but it was just for close up situations. I just didnt either like it or get the hang of it. The Etotech seemed easier for close up usage.

However, i do see its downside for longer rage applications. I was searching online to see if there is anyway that the Etotech's image can be magnified and i came across a couple of options that seem to mount before the Eotech. One is a 3x for ~$400 and a 4x for ~$800. I thought that was insane. Are there any other options to quickly magnify the red dot so it can be flipped to the side when not needed and so forth that would be less expensive? All inputs appreciated.

Yeah..they sound like a lot but compare an Eotech + Magnifier to an ACOG. You get the best of both in the Eotech combo for the same or less money. I played with a 3x Eotech magnifier last week and plan to add one with the flip mount to mine.

Here's the thing. With the Eotech/magnifier combo, you get a red dot that's a true red dot and a magnifier that can take it to 4x magnification when you need to to do so. ACOGs are supposedly slower at CQB distances than true red dots (read any of Zak Smith's optics posts to see why), so if you ditch the magnifier you have a faster CQB optic.

The downsides? Weight. Space on the rail. Need to flip the magnifier into and out of the way . Limited FOV compared to the ACOG. Not that much cheaper when you add everything up.

I dunno. There's no free lunch.

does the eotech magnifier come with an ambi flip mount?

because i know the eotech comes with its own mount. and i see that some sites show a mount for the magnifier but in some shot show videos i hear of a larue mount that flips. i'm foncused

btw op how do you like your p416

Do a search over at ar15.com.I recall reading a pretty lengthy thread on a couple of companies that were supposedly making some pretty good quality knock offs of both the flip mount and the magnifiers for about 1/4 the price I think.I have only read the forum there a handful of times, so I'm sorry I cant give you any more detail to help find the thread. If I recall or find anything, I'll add the info in here for you though.

The Eotech magnifier comes in like 3 versions. Quick disconnect..flip mount...and ring mount (I think). The flip mount works well.

I read a review the other day (can't find it now) on the knockoff magnifier for 1/4 the price. Did NOT review well. Bad glass..bad eye relief. Get what you pay for.

Good glass is expensive. Cheap glass is cheap. Optics are one of the areas in which you get almost exactly what you pay for.

The one factor that can screw this logic up is the presence of surplus Soviet optics, which are often quite good (they're essentially Zeiss glass) but also quite cheap, due to the fact that they were subsidized by the misery of an entire nation for 50-odd years. ;)

No, it uses the reticle of the dot. That's nice because only the dot has to be securely mounted, if the magnifier has a little wobble or doesn't re-latch in exactly the same spot, it doesn't matter, as long as your eye relief is right.

Really now? How, exactly, does this work?

He's saying that you use the reticle on the Eotech which is mounted and doesn't move. The magnifier is on the flip to side mount. Since the Eotech dot never moves it always holds zero. Even if the magnifier doesn't latch back exactly in the same spot you won't lose your zero.

what's even cooler is the dot doesn't grow when the magnifier is "in" because of the holographics
