Trying to get to THR this morning, I was distracted by this news crawl on the home page on my wife's computer: Drug poisoning deaths hit record; Kill thousands more than guns

Drug Poisoning Deaths on the Rise

(April 3) -- Poisoning continues to be the second-leading cause of injury
deaths in the USA, outstripping deaths caused by firearms for the second
year in a row, a federal report says.

Drugs are responsible for most of the increase in poisoning deaths, a
researcher said.

For 40 years, deaths caused by car crashes and firearms have topped the
list of injury deaths in the USA. Poisoning edged into the No. 2 position
in 2004, and the report shows the trend continues for 2005, the latest
year for which numbers are available. The report is published in the
March Health E-Stats.

Death rates for automobile accidents and firearms did not change much from
1999 to 2005, but the latest analysis shows that the rates for fatal
poisonings increased at a dramatic pace and that narcotic drugs are
responsible for the majority of the increase. .....

The big increase in poisoning deaths is attributed to overdose by
methadone when used as a substitute for oxycotin as a painkiller or
as a recreational drug.

The statistic pages with the article show:
Code:
Leading Causes Of Fatal Injuries in 2005 USA

Rank: Cause: Deaths:
 1 Auto accidents 43,667
 2 Poisoning 32,691
 3 Firearms 30,694
 4 Falls 20,426
 5 Suffocation 13,920
The firearms stat is a combination of all firearms deaths including
suicides, homicides and accidents. I suspect that the other stats
lump suicides, homicides and accidents together; most gun deaths are
suicides. Expect to hear about 30,694 gun murders or 30,694 gun
accidents in the coming weeks or 84 kids a day dying from guns without
trigger locks or microstamped firing chambers.

Remember the total number of deaths each year in the USA is
over 2,000,000 -- greater than the populations of Luxemborg
and Lichenstein combined. Not because we have a third of a
billion population, but because we have guns.

I suggest we begin a crusade to ban automobiles, any chemical that could be kept under the sink (where children could reach it), call for a background check on gravity, and force everyone to wear Michelin Man suits to protect from falls.

Only then will we be safe.

If you want to really reduce the number of unnecessary deaths, ban doctors.

FACTS TO PONDER:

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.

(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.

(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

Now think about this:

Guns:

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million..)

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.

Statistics courtesy of FBI UCR

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!
