Ever been asked to hold a strangers gun?

Yes several times 30 years or so ago. I had permision to hunt a old farm tract that had overgrown stone walls I'd follow. I came across other hunters using the same area and was asked to hold their long gun so they could climb over the wall. I did the same.

maybe not exactly what the OP had in mind, but on several occasions at my gun range, after either admiring someone rifle or inquiring about it, i've been offered to hold and even to shoot. technically these folks are strangers even though it's a membership only range

It was a different time than today..People trusted other folks and they were more often than not, worthy of that trust.

It was probably a case of the Detective knew the owner of the store and figured if he hired you, you were worthy of his trust.

He figured you would guard his gun as if it were your own, and you would never even consider messing with it. That's just the way it was back 50 years ago.

My word back then and today is my bond.. If I say I will be there and don't show up, you can figure I'm dead.

I've handed my unloaded firearm to interested parties which were strangers to me. Always a friend of a friend who knows I like guns and is new to the hobby, using me as a gateway, though. Never in a "hold my beer and watch this" context.

Really just more evidence of how a lot of cops think of their issue firearm as just a piece of heavy kit they're required to carry around.

I could be the mirror image of you and say this is just more evidence of why NO COP should ever under any circumstances consider any non-sworn person to be anything other than an enemy. Because you are representative of a lot of citizens.

The primary difference is the quoted response was directed at a guy's story of something that happened 25 years ago

My response would be to something posted 25 hours ago.

The former evidence is a couple decades stale, the latter evidence is fresh.

What if because I read this type of junk quoted above, I decided to have a banner day and write 40 tickets? Yeah, us against them. F em! That's the attitude we should all strive to maintain.

#rolleyes

Assuming the original "this one time at band camp"-esqe Cop-hands-sidearm-to-stranger story even occurred, it deviated from the norm sufficiently enough as to necessitate the original poster bringing it up out of the blue 25 years later.

That alone nukes the "A lot of cops..." argument. If a lot of cops did this, it wouldn't be noteworthy 25 years later, and A LOT of members would have similar stories.

On to the next troll post.

One must also remember that 30 years ago, was a whole different time and place
compared with the world we live in today.
Yep, 30 years ago crime was FAR worse than it is now; the homicide rate was about double what it is today. Now, you're about half as likely to be shot and killed than you were back then.

The world has changed a lot since then.
Yeah, since then the homicide rate has plummeted by about 50% in the US.

I would have given him time to get his pants off, then popped a balloon and watched the wackiness ensue. :)

all I can say is I always taught my kids that if they ever got into a problems or got lost in a store, go to the person at the cash register and explain the situation. If a company with several million dollars of inventory trusted you then I guess this person did also. Still, pretty dumb thing for him to do.

Once. It was weird, too. I was walking down the street, down town, when this young fella came running by like Lucifer was on his tail. Without a word, he tossed me a handgun as he ran by, and he was gone. I stuck it in my pocket while I contemplated what to do. I had just settled on turning it into the police, when lo and behold, a couple officers came around the corner and ran in the same direction as the young fella had gone. I tried to get their attention, but all they said was "not now" as they ran past. I figured I'd wait until the police were less busy, so I just went on back home. Never did figure out where everyone was off and running to, but to this day, I still enjoy shooting my free gun. People sure are friendly down town.
