i rarly go to public ranges anymore-dull,boring,poor ventilation and restrictions up the hoopla.i rather hop in the car and drive half an hour to the country where i can drive to the range and walk around plinkin and shooting any gun i wish.its best to ask around at the gunshops and local depts as to who doesnt mind(in fact, some farmers will even pay you to shoot their pests)its much more fun plinkin a lump of dirt or walking along a hillside and watching the animals and listening to the sounds.no range fees, fresh air and freedom to plink is what you need.ive even felt so relaxed, ive fallen asleep under a tree only to be awakened by 15 cows standing around sniffing at me.you just never know what youll find plinking in the country.

MMM, bored at an IDPA match??

Let's see, I get there about 8:30 and start to set up the match, At 10, we start and I'm one of three range safety officers with 25 shooters.
Halfway though, the scorer that I had switches off with someone else. About 12:30, the lunch call is made but I'm still stuck on the line with the last of the shooters. About ten minutes later, I head for lunch and ten minutes after that, the call to start the next stages is heard with someone yelling that they need me back on the line. Around 1:00, some of the shooter have left for home and I'm pasting targets and I'm still the range officer. As soon as the light gets better, I start taking pictures with the digital while I'm the range safety officer and pasting targets. I take between 20 to thirty pictures. At that time more people have gone home.

Around 3:30, we're done and ten people are left. I'm one of four people putting the stuff away with six people picking up brass.
I get home around 4:30. Clean the guns and upload the pictures.

I am a diehard desert shooter, I bring my own targets. I like shooting empty shotgun shells with a 22lr

Shooting at the range is a pain, literally.

The roof is made from tin, and when someone is
firing a 50BMG, the resonation is incredible.

I don't like getting showered with casings from
full auto fire, when I am trying to sight in a rifle.

I will shoot a steel match occasionally, and that's about it.

Geez, I never knew how good I had it at our IDPA -

Register by 0900, then we break up into 5 squads of 8-10 shooters & 2 RSO's (or more). Each squad goes to a bay, and you rotate through the bays in squads. Done by 1300 - 50-100 rounds downrange, and 5 stages done. Don't really have time to get bored between shooting, reloading, painting, & shooting the breeze with each other.

Each time I'm done shooting, I'm fired up to do it again. I've been considering competing in 2 divisions on the same day. I'm told the SEPSA shoots (Jacksonville's IPSC) are more fun. Well, you throw more lead downrange at least.

Sounds like you need a better range - are there any other clubs nearby?

Me, I wish I could find a decent 2 gun or carbine club to shoot with.

The IDPA range is only two months old. The real problem is the people who aren't asked to participate which is the people in charge's problem. One bay with three stages that can only run one at a time.

What I do dislike is after taking 25 to thirty pictures I always ask someone to take a few of me and I always get a whiny answer. No one trusts themselves with someone else's camera. They did offer to buy a memory card for me which I refused. It was a nice gesture.

At one time I began to get bored with target shooting.

I took up action pistol and in the course of self improvement decided that I needed to work on my shooting grip and consistency. I remanded myself to the target range for remedial shooting where I am becoming increasingly interested in working with grip and accuracy. I now see it as a really intriguing challenge.

And my groups and scores are improving. Nothing like putting a couple hundred rounds through a ragged 3 inch hole with a revolver from the offhand position. Catches the attention of wannabes that are doing shotgun style patterns resulting in a lot of he-man muttering about faulty firearms.

With enough practice I'll get good someday.

Like the man says, "Keep them in the 10 ring".
