Ever Purchased a rifle for a specific purpose and never used it?

I have never owned a Fantasy Apocalypse Rifle "*tactical", (FAR*T)

That's a great acronym Float Pilot. I'm going to remember that.

I bought a M1A built to shoot matches with the idea I was going to start shooting high power matches. It hasn't happened yet, but i plan to remedy that this summer. Mostly, I've bought enough rifles without an specific intent to cover whatever use I might have - from dangerous game to benchrest competitions. My father and I are accumulators of firearms.

Would you count an air rifle/pellet gun used only once? Bought a Ruger air rifle for specific varmints, used it once, it wasn't that effective, and have used traps since. :p

I once bought a "borrow gun". I have made it policy not to loan my guns to friends ( that aren't super close) because of bad experience in the past, I have had a nice rifle nearly ruined because a much inexperienced buddy didn't realize that water doesn't mix with metal and did not bother to tell me. I wouldn't let anyone that I didn't know would be safe with one of my guns but on occasion I have had friends come by asking if they could borrow a deer rifle for a weekend or something like that I wasn't totally sure would make it back 100%.

So instead of getting into it with friends over why you cant borrow MY rifle or telling them "No, your brother nearly murdered the last one". I just bought a borrow gun. It was a Savage Edge .308 that came with a scope, this would be there gun I handed out when an ole' pal came knockin. Well, the thing is, I haven't had anyone ask this year and normally by now I've had 2 or 3 knocks. So in the closet it sets. Maybe I finally got through to them.

Ya know, some people are great to be around and have fun with but I wish they knew better about firearm maintenaince...

I bought a Savage 99 in .308 for my fantasy hog hunt. Sent it out, had the forend bedded, and a recoil pad installed. Put a Williams aperture sight on it. Developed a good accurate load for it.

When I finally got to go hog hunting (several years later) I took my AK. One shot drop with the 762X39. I will be taking my AR in that caliber for this years trip.

I guess I should sell the Savage as it is taking up space in my safe.

I bought an M1 Garand a few years back intended for deer hunting. Use it on zombies all the time, but still no deer.

Bought a national match service rifle with the intent of shooting a match or two but never did; worked up some great loads though.

Also traded a 4" Python for a Win model 70 that had a 26" stainless Douglas premium air gage barrel in 264 Win mag; liked my 25.06 better and never hunted with it....I have kicked myself in the ass many times over that trade.

Well, I do have two that I haven't shot yet. I buy them to shoot so that counts, right? Now as to specific type of shooting, I only own one firearm that has ever been used for the specific type of shooting it was purchased for. That is the Browning BPS Field model 20ga that my dad gave me when I was 10. It's spent time in the duck blind and has killed a fair number of squirrels, but it's been close to 20 years since it was fired in "anger". I just haven't been able to go hunting in well over a decade at this point. Last time I sat in a tree stand was with a borrowed rifle. Last time I had one of my guns out hunting was spotlighting jack rabbits in the Nevada desert (yes, it was perfectly legal). Most all of my guns have been simply relegated to recreational shooting until I finally settle down somewhere.

That said, I hope that a lead I have pans out on shooting some varmints next weekend. A local pistachio farmer who is friends with my wife has expressed a desire to have her gopher and squirrel problem "handled". I hope I'll finally get to see what a handful of loads that I've been working on for the .204, .223 and .243 will do to some critters. I'll probably bring the .17HMR along as well, but if the choice is between a 20gn bullet doing 2300 fps or a 62gn bullet doing around 3500fps...I may need to bring a mop...

BTW specific "zombie" rifles dont count, since we all know the zombie apocalypse isn't going to happen. At least we hope.
Good thing you hedged that. As to the likelihood, depends on what you consider a "zombie".

yep. My M1D is all ready to go but there are no blue helmets around to use it for which it was designed for. Sure is fun to poke paper though......chris3

A fully restored M1 Garand with match barrel. Shot it only a handful of times. Sits in the safe most of the time. Same with a S&W .44 Mag.

I got an AR for the zombie apocalypse. So far so good, haven't needed it.

I bought a Marlin 336 in .30-30 because I was planning on learning to hunt. Then I found out that NJ is shotgun only, and ammo is a bit to expensive to plink around with.

I traded it off for a Mossberg 500 slug barrel with a cantilever scope mount and Bushnell 3-9x scope. My gosh. Have you seen the price of sabot slugs? I never wound up going hunting, and the barrel sat in a corner for almost 6 months before I sold it off.

Custom ordered a State Arms 50BMG as well as an IOR 12-52X56 scope to shoot in open class competition. It hasn't even seen a televised competition! It has shot out to 600 yds though.(the longest distance I have had access to)
