Has anyone ever tried returning a gun back to the dealer. Without firing it? What about after firing it? Just curious. It seems like after buying a gun, we're stuck with it. Sometimes people even return cars why not guns?

I returned a Yugo M-48 Mauser to a Big-5 a couple years ago. After firing eleven rounds the extractor broke. Looked to me like it had been broken for a while (Half the broken edge was bright like freshly broken metal, the other half was dark like it had oxidized). They took it back and exchanged it, no problem.

Problem is...

once a gun is sold, even if it's unfired, it's considered "used"

at our shop we have different boxes that can be checked..."New, used, unfired" Anything already sold, even if in new condition with original box, is still sold as used

Yes, and I was sucessful. Had a Lemon HK USP that had been to factory twice.

This IMHO is why it is a good idea to patronize a local dealer. They knew me, swore me to secrecy, and did so.

This summer i bought a Taurus 44 mag,and after 20 rounds the crane(?) came out of the frame, dumping the retaining spring and pin to the ground. The dealer i bought it from took it back and gave me another one(which he went over ,and checked out for me),i did have to fill out the forms again, and he gave me a receit for the return.

He made a comment, that he could do this because it was a Taurus,Is thier warranty that good?

I took back a S&W 22 auto once. Bought it used. The smith said it only needed to have the chamber polished for reliable extraction and he proceded to do it. I think he should have ensured it fired before he sold it. Screw the buff job, I want my money back. He was ok with that so I looked around and ended up trading up to a larger caliber.

Yep, at Carter's Country, a local dealer with 3 or 4 Houston area stores.

I bought a Kimber Stainless at one of their locations on a Friday on the way home from work. Cleaned it up good, lubed it and on the next day went to a different Carter Country, one with a range, to shoot it.

Jamomatic. One shot and the slide and frame would just totally sieze up. Took a mallet to move the slide on the frame and eject the casing.

I went into the store behind the range, they broke it down, did a quick lube job and gave it back to me and told me to come back in if I had any more problems with it.

I go back out to the range, the slide and frame appear to be well lubed. BANG, one shot, siezed up again. At this point I'm thinking 'great, a new gun that I'm excited about and I have to send it back to Kimber, wait goodness knows how long, etc.'.

I took it in and the guy behind the counter says, 'Did it happen again?'. I say, 'yep'. He turns to the helper next to him and says, 'get him another'.

I hope I'm not giving them too much credit. Maybe this is typical, I hope it is for others, but I was floored. I had to redo the NICS forms and get a receipt saying that I bought a Kimber Stainless new for $.01 (kept that one).

5 minutes later I'm back on the range happy as a jay bird popping caps. This Kimber has been flawless.

Sorry for the long story, but I complain a lot about bad dealers. I thought it only fair to recognize the good ones. They won a customer for life. Oh, and they have this sweet 12 months, no interest, deal 2 or 3 times a year.

p.s. - I can now also brag about having owned 2 Kimbers, not just one. :D

WWII German P38 9mm pistol....

I bought a byf 43 P38 once and when I took it to the range to test fire it
it shot "full auto" bursts and emptied the magazine in a couple seconds or less! I took it back and they said it was still under store warrenty and they sent it to their gunsmith to fix it free of charge.

it was imported from Russia and was captured from the Germans in WWII

Once, long ago. Charter Arms AR-7, brand new the stock bolt would _not_ screw into the receiver. I think the hole was mis-bored. They (I think it was Penny's or Sears, and that will give you an idea how long ago this was) just swapped it for me, then and there.

I haven't had to try lately.

I have once done this. The owner kepy complaining about the time and paperworl involved in a returned gun. I simply said, I understand that, how about you charge me a 10% return fee. He was fine with that. Sometimes you need to compromise.

Yup. Now for the record, I shoot anything I buy as soon as possible.

I bought a used m10 smith and took it immediatly to the range.
The barrel came unscrewed as I fired it. I took it right back to the store and got my money and my permit back and the yellow form was torn up and thrown in the trash while I stood there.

Now that is customer service.

DOH! you caught me.But I don't have to return it just have to eat $25 of my deposit. Let's just say I brought my friends USP to the range and rented a G----19 I turned out to be really impressed by the Glock and just ho hum about the USP. So it's either going to be a BHP, Glock 19, or a Colt.

Took an M48 back to a Dunham's store because once I pushed the grease turn out of the barrel, I noticed that the barrel was bulged 2" back from the muzzle.
The guy working there would here none of it, so I asked to speak with his manager. I basicly told him I'm doing him a favor and told him that the rifle was defective and dangerous and if someone else would have bought it they could have seriously hurt themselves shooting it (I embellished a little to the manager I'll admit, but wouldn't you?:D ) He finally gave me an exchange on it seeing that I've bought several guns from his store in the past. Not long after that, I noticed that the stores in my area- I believe they are under the same management as I see the same employees in 2 or 3 different stores at different times, posted signs at the gun counter saying that they would under no circumstances take a returned firearm:eek:

The store I patronize has a 30-day return on used guns. I have returned two. A Colt Mustang that was well worn, and an SKS that shot 6" groups........at 25 yards. Both times I exchanged for another gun and came away happy.
