You guys do have porcupines right? I heard they are tough to shoot too.

Up north. No porcupines in the southern lower peninsula of Michigan. Yep I bet they are tough to kill, and not good for dogs. Around here (suburbs of Detroit City) we have typical urban animals, though a LOT of white tailed deer. I saw a dozen deer in the local park in a residential neighborhood, but the park is close to a 20-acre tract of woodland. Also have seen up to a dozen wild turkeys in peoples front yards, usually across from the river valley, bu once along the freeway service drive. Thankfully have not seen many rats. Can't shoot in the city so, trapped one rat and had to drown it. Wife said can we release it somewhere. I said I will not release a rat within 5 miles of any house, so no. This all reminds me I have to dispose of a dead squirrel that fell out of a tree the other day and lays stiff along the sidewalk.

Yes, porcupines will absorb .22lr all day long unless you get a headshot, which can be tough to do when they are up in a tree and their instinct is to keep their rear end pointed toward you. I've only shot one with a handgun and yes, it did take multiple hits of 9mm from close range to get the job done.17hmr will do the trick nicely, as will .44 mag, .50 cal muzzleloader with Barnes hollowpoints, .300 win mag, and 3.5" turkey loads.

I'm sure my 10mm would have done it with one shot, might grab it next time!
Maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure it's that simple. 9mm has 2x or more energy and a much bigger bullet than .17hmr, yet I've seen a porkie take several shots of 9mm and .17hmr reliably kills them with one shot. I think the difference is that the .17 v-max bullets are designed to dump all of their energy inside a tiny little varmint body while handgun bullets are typically designed for a much large human torso.

As it warms up, they come up out of their winter burrows to start finding grubs and the like. They like warmer places in the night, which is what attracts them to roads. They like to "hunt" low damp areas for grubs and termites.

The Aztec word for them translates as "rabbit turtle"--which is what I can remember of it, written out in Aztec, it's mostly phonetic symbols. In Brazilian Portuguese it's tatu, Or, Ricardo Montalban's sidekick on Fantasy Island.

You telling your age now!
Most people these days wouldn't know who Ricardo Maltalban is.

I had to swerve to avoid running over one lust a few days ago in Goose Creek, SC. They've been in this area for at least 3 decades from my personal observation.

They don't look like something I'd appreciate running over for a variety of reasons. And, since I JUST bought this car, I really have no intention of having to deal with any damage caused by one of them.

Shotguns work on them. As said, hit 'em in the head, they're down doing the crappie.
I've only seen one live armadillo, in my yard in TX at about 1 in the morning. The dog started barking like crazy, I opened the door, the two of us stared at each other for a second, then it waddled off. Saw lots of dead ones on the road, Dallas' main country stations' mascot is called 'Speedbump' the Armadillo.

They're no fun to hit on a motorcycle. Hit one a few years ago on my Goldwing. Was nighttime on a two lane hwy. Never saw it, but when my teeth slammed together, I turned around rode back to see what happened. He was on the edge of the road bleeding but moving. I made sure he didn't recover.

I’ve seen too many to count as a kid in central Texas. It seems like the armadillo population was reduced when the fire ants moved in. Talk about evil!?!? Fire ants are wicked and I’ve seen them adapt their biting style since I was young. They used to latch on until you killed them, now they bite and let go when they sense you going after them. Anyway, armadillos seem to be coming back in my area. They root around on the far corner of my property so I don’t bother shooting them. I’ll probably never need to since they stay away from the house.

They showed up in Kansas a few years ago. A shotgun works if you're close, a 9mm from farther out, a .308 does a very good job (all observations from personal experience). I blame refugees from TX, at least so far we don't have fire ants, killer bees, centipedes and such.

They've been down in the south of Kansas for a long time but I saw one on the north side of K10 today so,yeah, "They're Heeere...".

Well, now I've got another mission! Next time one is in my garden I'm gonna see what a .40 and a .45 will do. I think the 9mm would have worked with Fmj's, but now I know hp won't.
Needed ftx, 9mm hp isn't that violent on a critter so small, run a splodey bullet, look for the "not enough penetration for self defense"ratings. Short of that ballistically speaking, shotgun with lots of big pellets or rifle with splodey bullets should be better, handgun? Think .357, 10mm, .41+ light for caliber fast flying hp types...in .41 Winchester makes a silvertip hp for home defense that would do it. Had a similar interaction with a huge raccoon years ago, I mean HUGE, bullets aren't sploding enough to cause shock, just bloodletting.

I have some 135gr frangibles in 10mm, but I don't think they would be any better, probably worse. I bet the 147tmj or the 125gr cast I have in 9mm would have done better. The 115 jhp gouged out huge holes in his shell, but didn't penetrate far into vitals. As you can see from the pic, the SKS rds went thru and took inards out with them. I also have some Lehigh SD's in 9mm that I haven't loaded up yet, but I'd hate to waste them on a varmint.
I think next time I'll take my 22/45 lite with some Velocitors and my XD40 with some fmj's and see what happens. Of course I'll probably have the SKS or an Ar slung up for last resort again.

Yeah true frangible isn't what I was thinking of, that's extra splodey :D in my 10 I'd be really tempted by the 165 gdhp, toughish but at 10mm speeds, should create quite the cavity, and still get that penetration you're looking for.... In .40 though.... The 125 Barnes might be my pick..... That gets expensive for what we're talking about though..... My dislike for the tmj stems from poking small holes but should definitely get you through and through.... The ftx I was thinking of for 9mm would have been the 124 or 135, the 115s were extra splodey, probably would have yielded the same results as you found with your hps, but I am in agreement that specialized ammo would be frivolous for the purpose. I'd be very interested to see any follow up results you come up with regardless of what you use!

A teenager hit one in a Buick suv at 4am and totaled the car. Hit it began swerving and boom ditch city. We seeing them a lot in north Ga. Mainly on the side of the road. Saw a few in the wild down in south ga. Touch there backs and they jump straight up. Was funny.
