I'd planned on running this old bank account of mine down for spending money until it was empty, but today I checked the balance and discovered a I had quite a lot of money in there. I must've deposited some checks before I started using my other account exclusively.

Thus I'm planning on retiring my current Browning Hi-Power Mark III to training duty and purchasing a new BHP Practical for carry. This way I'll be able to shoot the Mark III heavily while shooting the Practical enough to know it works. I'd been planning to do this for a while by picking up a cheap FM Hi-Power, but this new option seems a little better. I won't have to worry about any potential quality issues with the FM and I'll have a new carry piece with a couple nice touches (grips and a "combat" hammer). I'll have to order another Wolff spring and I'll probably have the "three bars" sights changed out to my preferred "dot-the-i" style.

Any opinions on this decision before I put it into action?

You know about the new FN (Belgian) High Powers for $399 from CDNN, right? They are the standard model, but that would probably be a significant savings over the cost of a new Practical model. Use the difference for gunsmithing if you want to have work done.

I happen to shoot on a range owned by a reputable gunsmith, so that's definately something for me to consider.

I'll have to talk to my FFL dealer about getting in touch with CDNN.

I have three Hi Powers and I am on the lookout for a fourth. Great guns, you'll find yourself wanting a Standard too just to have one of each. ;)

I like the answers you've gotten. Get the cheap CDNN Mk III and spend some of the extra cheese making it your dream gun.
