Eyesight after the range

I have astigmatism. For some reason, it's worse after a couple hours at the range. It gets back to 'normal' after a few hours.

Any one else have that issue?

Have a pair of seamless bifocals ground to focus on the front sight distance with the lower part of the lens

I find that after shooting irons on a rifle or after shooting a high powered scope for too long makes my eyes tired, the dom eye has trouble focusing and the other just feels fuzzy (from being closed too long). Probably eye stain, for me better optics and getting off the sights for a few min helps a lot on longer days at the range.

Do you shoot with one eye closed or both open?

Once I learned to shoot with both eyes open I haven't had a problem like you describe since.

When shooting through a scope or with iron sights, you're forcing one eye close and that puts pressure on the eyeball and changes it's shape temporarily. As you get older it takes longer for the eyeball to rebound from the pressure. Got that from an eye doctor who shoots.

This is common for me too. It's one reason I'm switching to peep sights. I think it's eye strain of some sort. I agree with RC...some sort of glasses change is probably in order.

Happens to me too. I'm a year overdue for a prescription rework.. had trouble shooting at 100 yards this weekend. Couldn't even SEE the targets at 300.

(the blurry thing after the fact happens to me - I first noticed it when bore sighting and shooting at closer ranges, such as an indoor airgun.. )

I shoot both eyes open, either iron sights or a red dot. No scopes.

Just wondering if muzzle blast has anything to do with it.

Wearing glasses or contacts?

I have a similar issue with contacts, but don't find the same issue to be as prevalent when I'm wearing glasses.

I almost never shoot with contacts anymore.
I also had a pair of safety glasses made with the right eye having a 30" focus.
I have no idea what that means, but a guy I know with opinions I trust told me to do it. Seems to make a difference when shooting for more than a couple hours, eyestrain doesn't seem to happen.

Contacts (on me, anyway) aren't "precise enough". I can get my eyeglasses prescription tuned to a very fine degree.. contacts, pretty much "close" is all I can get. I suppose if you're lucky and your prescription need falls exactly on the powers they produce, you'd be in good shape. Pay to get glasses custom ground and you'll be in great shape, visually.

Speaking of.. time to make an eye exam..
