I just built a 30/06 M98 a few months ago, have not been happy with it so far, bolt seems too stiff. Been thinking about robbing the stock and trigger for the next project and just parting it out.

I do not make this decision lightly, I've been a big fan of the 8mm bore for years and, I just don't see when I'll EVER use the 30/06.

1. I have a damn near PERFECTLY balanced 8x57is in a McMillian stock that, while not the most accurate rifle I own(roughly 1.5 MOA), has been an absolute hammer for several years here on Wisconsin deer.
2. I have an 8x64s with a 23" ER Shaw barrel, that I also recently finished that runs smooth as warm butter and is quickly showing itself to be wonderfully accurate,
3. I'm having a Mark X rebarreled at Pac Nor right now to 8x68s...and I'm thinking the stock and trigger form the 30/06 along with a 3 pos safety would be REALLY nice...

4. I probably have .30 cal covered with a tricked out ER Shaw Mark VII in .300 Win Mag...beautiful rifle bedded into a Savage 114 stock with a Hogue pad, but it's kind of a boat anchor with a 26" heavy barrel. Still pretty great for stand hunting and range work though.

Long story short, thinking about parting out project and pretending it never existed for the next one...am I insane?

You like the thump of the big hitters from the sounds of it. The 30-06 deserves a chance though. What ammo are you using that isn’t satisfying you?

Rifle isn’t functioning quite like I’d like, not an ammunition problem. Bolt lift is a little off, suspect beginning of lug setback.

Unnecessary aggravation so you won't miss it. Or blueprint the receiver? Can't that be cut flat again? I have a savage receiver that has noticeable wear and asked about that some time ago. Never made up my mind about caliber. Indecision leads to inaction.

It can be trued up and recarburized, not really cost effective. Better off just buying a commercial receiver. Either way your headspace will probably be off.

Ya , you can't just screw that one in and tighten the nut . One of my shop sayings is "there's more to it than that. But no hill for a high stepper. But you knew that.

I never get married to a project. You don't catch a wall hanger every time you cast a line. No shame in walking away from something that didn't turn out to be all you had hoped for.

It sounds like you already know the answer. Part it out and don’t look back. If you ever regret it, you can always build yourself another.
