What would you guys think of an FAL for heavy metal? I'd like something a little lower priced than an AR-10 or M1, with cheap mags that don't have to be inserted like AK mags.

Would sites, accuracy be sufficient?

The FAL would be fine for He-Man / Heavy-Metal divisions in 3Gun.

Make sure you can hit a Larue target (12x20") at 400 yards and there should be no target the gun can't hit.

When you get one:
Make sure the rear sight is tight, no excessive slop.
Your eyes may prefer the hooded rear sight and/or a turnded down diameter front sight.
Get rid of any slop at the upper-to-lower receiver pivot pin area. Shim screw head and/or tweak ears.
Use consistent ammo. Good surplus, commercial, or reloads. Your rifle may work well with just 150 gr. range bullets.
Mag changes from a pouch/carrier aren't bad. Watch what your doing and hit the magwell.
Go to www.falfiles.com and do a search for 3-gun, or something close.
Won't be as accurate as an AR10 or M1, but you may do good with one. Give it a whirl.
Get one and do it to it.

i love my imbel ... it is truely a reliable weapon ... it will run dirty as hell, like an ak, but it shoots the venerable .308, and, quite frankly, it looks a whole lot better ;) .. shot in a club function sunday ... with the aussie nato surplus it shoots about 3 moa @ 200 yds ... i'm quite happy with it

FAL is great for heavy metal. Good ergonomics, very reliable. Less accurate than the M1A and AR-10, but you win major style points :)

Heh, I don't know about other folks' FAL's, but the mags on mine insert and eject in the same manner/same controls as an AK. Nose in first, lever rear into the catch. Hit catch to release the mag and lever it out.

I didn't know the mags loaded similar to the AK on an FAL. Does anyone know if the bushmaster 308 AR (which utilizes FAL mags...right?) loads this way?
