FAU Shooting at campus apts.

Hell, we just had one right over here at Coastal Carolina University where one drunk guy was waving around a shotgun at a party (jokingly, he claimed :cuss:) and his friend, another drunk guy, pointer a different shotgun at him, thinking it was unloaded :banghead: and pulled the trigger.

Bout darn near took his friend's arm off.

We also had a shooting in some nearby apartments popular with CCU students about two weeks ago that shut down campus for a day.

And, I don't know what "common denominator" Pbearperry speaks of, but IIRC, both incidents I speak of involved African-American shooters. They still have a long way to go to catch up to the craziness of caucasian school shooters.

crap. I was just headed there to meet somebody for LSAT prep. Guess that's cancelled. Gotta make a phone call.

THR - saving me from making pointless drives.

Thanks Bones.

Is it just me or is there a common denominator in a lot of these stupid shootings going on all over the country?

2, 4, 5, is it one of those? It is isn't it?

For those confused, I think the common denominator he is meaning is "Gun-Free Zone".

The gunman fired two shots, Lowe said. The gun has not been recovered, although Lowe said police were chasing some "good leads."

Man, they're chasing it at 1200 fps!

Well what is happening now is the media is pouncing on every crime committed with a gun near a campus.

This one doesn't read anything at all like a nutcase going on a shooting rampage at a school, the traditional "school shooting".

Someone got their feelings hurt or their girlfriend stolen at a party and decided to shoot someone.

That's a whole different world from a "school shooting" but the media is all over it simply because it has the word "gun" and "school" in the story somewhere.

Police said that the shooting happened at about 1 a.m. when a fight broke out at the University Village Apartments.

Sorry, that could and does happen anywhere.

ahhh. Of course. I should have gotten that. In my defense, I woke up only an hour ago and am currently drinking my coffee.

I read "common denominator" and wasn't sure where he was coming from - but it should have been so clear what he meant.

Anyways, I do sincerely hope everybody at FAU is ok. I know a few grads from there. I don't think I know any current students, but I do meet there every few weeks for LSAT practice when for some reason the other person can't make it all the way down to NSU.

I wonder what the motive was to start shooting? At least it wasn't the same kind of school shooting that VT or NIU were.

Stupidity and alcohol are my bets....

Yup. And book-smart does not equal either intelligence or common sense. I have seen a lot of educated fools on college campuses.

Maybe they should do a "bed check" like in basic training around 10pm, till these college students "grow up" a little? What are they doing out partying at 1a.m, anyway?

Shooting at 1:00am

Police called at 1:16am

Warning sirens sounded at 1:42am

I wonder how much they paid for that whole early warning thingy. Maybe they're big enough to hide behind if the bad guy decides to keep shooting for the whole 42 minutes.

Finals

I lot of universities are in the middle of finals, which is always a very stressful time, especially for people having problems. Not suprising, people are more likely to do stupid things when under a great deal of stress.

Makes me wonder how many of these are attempted sucide by cop or "If I'm going to die, I'm going to take a bunch of people with me" type situations.

Allowing guns on campus would (possibly) reduce the number of people they can kill before dying, but may not deter them if the end goal is to die.

Common Denominator Confusion

I think the confusion was we (myself included) automatically assumed he was criticizing the race of the individual rather than the gun-free environment.

Amazing how we are conditioned to find racists under every bed.

+1
bostekrisco beat me to it. 42 minutes is pretty damn unimpressive for a security alert system. My campus has the same stupid security idea. I guess it looks good on paper, that way if a shooting happens they can say they tried right?
To Regen, deterence is an illusion IMHO, these shooters are going to shoot whether they think someone is carrying or not. If it happens in one of my classes, I just hope its after campus changes their policy towards carrying so that I might walk out of class that day.

From what I have been told thus far the shooter isn't enrolled at the school. Person injured isn't enrolled in the school either. There was an argument between some men over a young lady, argument led to a fight. Fight led to the injuries, not gun play. Two shots were fired.
Oh and Cheese, no prob my girl goes to FAU for English Ed. so I tend to stay well informed of events related to the school. Good luck with those LSAT's :)

Blame MTV and all the "thug life" videos... We've got kids in far-rural Missouri wearing their hats sideways and flashing what they think are gang signs... I am SO tempted to stuff a few of 'em in my van, and take them into north midtown St. Louis and shove 'em out...

If and when you do, would you please let me know? I'm close by and would love to watch.
