If you have or could have one rifle (that is not an ar-15) That you feel would be good for every role, from hunting to defense to the mildly tactical what would it be?

WAAAAAaaaaaaaa!!!!!!! NO ARs???? :(:(:(
Fine. How about a Magpul/Bushmaster Masada/ACR, i know they are vaporware...if not, am i allowed to pick a SCAR?:D

not to worry, I recognize the ar as probably the best most versatile out there, however had I not said that this would have been flooded with votes for the ar and thus become less interesting.

sure :)

30-30 lever-gun.

Or .308 / 30-06 18" - 20" bolt-action with both open sights and scope.
Maybe a Scout rifle would best fit the bill.

while I'm at it I have a question, what is the scope on that socom on the bottom?

Though the m1a is a fantastic rifle I still find myself pretty torn between that and a steyr scout

Good quality bolt action in .308 or 30/06. Pick any good make and learn to shoot it well.
Ditto.

What's up with all these silly hedgehog thingies (aka Picatinny rails)? To me they are the functional and cosmetic equivalent of gluing velcro all over a rifle. Unattractive and unnecessary.

looks like a Leupold mark 4 CQ

A well scoped SKS.

Cheap, fairly accurate, dependable.

Balistics similar to a .30-30, good enough for hunting.

This one. It's not an AR15.

Chambered in .260 Rem. Elite 6500 2.5-16x50mm side focus. Free-floated carbon fiber handguard. Ace stock, S.P. sling, ERGO brand grip, incredible trigger, tac-latch, adjustable gas tube.

Tell me what it can't do pretty darned well - I challenge you. :)

"Mildly Tactical", lol.

It's an AR10-*type*; specifically a DPMS LR-260L. It's in the "AR" family, but not in the "AR15" family. The only prohibition was on AR15s. Are you wanting to rephrase the question? :)

I'd grab my Remington Model 7 carbine in .308. Just about the perfect gun in my opinion.

Dang it Dr. Tad, i was going to pick a AR-10, but i guess i say it as "that is not an AR"....lol

I said no ar-15's, I didn't say anything about ar 10's and other variants :)
