5.56 Ruger Ranch with Riton 1x8. Went to the range at work today since it was quiet workwise. At 50 yards from a bench this thing shoots lights out. Standing offhand at 40 yards it knocked plates down as fast as I could rack the bolt. AR mags, rugged construction, light weight, but at the end of the day, it’s a range toy. Can’t hunt whitetail in Virginia with .22 cal and I don’t own a big piece of property that requires a “truck” gun for varmints and such. Just such a shame. I have another ranch set up in 300blk and with a can, it makes a great brush gun during rifle season, but this one will just stay in the safe.

There is nothing wrong with having range toys. I have a couple of safes full of rifles and shotguns, but only hunt with a few of
them. I still enjoy shooting them. I have basically the same rifle with a 22" barrel with a 4.5-14X44 scope on it for playing at the range.

But I can see where a 1X8 scope would be pretty useless. :) You have a 1-8X scope with what looks like a 24mm front objective; probably a 1-8X24. The scopes magnification, or magnification range comes 1st followed by an "X". The number after the "X" is the objective size if it is listed. They often are not. 1X8 would be a fixed power 1X scope with a tiny 8mm front objective.

You’re a lot of fun at parties aren’t you? Tell people not to end their sentences with prepositions and insist on usage of the Oxford comma? 🤣🤣🤣 I get scope vernacular, just using shorthand, but thanks for the clarification for our readers……

Hey, at least you didn't say it uses AR Clips.
Then you'd really be getting tore up. LOL.

I have the same gun with a 1-4X24 scope on it. Haven’t shot it since sighting it in. May never take it out again. Doesn’t really matter to me. I like it.

If I had to have a purpose or use for stuff I owned I probably wouldn’t own a lot of the stuff I do. Heck, I own multiples of the same guns because 1: I like them and 2: I got smoking deals on them.

Absolutely, not upset at lack of use or purpose, it’s just disappointing because it’s such a great gun!

Glad you described the scope correctly!

I can't criticize you. I bought & partially assembled my first AR pretty much because I was annoyed that there were those that would not want us to own one. A few years ago a friend sat up a range on his property that reaches out to 375 yards. While the people we shot with were willing to share their guns I got annoyed that I couldn't hang at 375 with my rifle that wore a red dot & back up irons. I bought an inexpensive AR & LPVO so I could because I didn't want to change how the other rifle was sat up. I think it is okay to have something just because it is fun & I like it.

It's accurate, but not a target rifle- the sights are very basic. It's too pretty for a truck gun, and too weak for big game.
You can put a scope on them, but the comb is kinda low and the factory mounts are really ugly. I keep toying with the idea of sending the barrel out to have Unertl bases installed....
I really only keep it because of the stunning wood.

Browning BLR 7-08. Can't get a gloved hand into the lever and there's too much drop at the comb for proper scope use. But its slim, trim, very nicely finished and I really like it. Or a Mod 94 '66 Centennial my dad bought to commemorate my birth. Its to long, heavy and pretty to hunt with, and has no collector value. But that 26" octogon barrel hangs so nicely and its fun to make like a Buffalo hunter and lob bullets a couple hun'erd yards with those old buckhorn sights. Can't hit much my eyes anymore, but it fun to try. And in all honesty, my one AR. Unless the world turns upside down, I really have no use for it. But it is fun to shoot and tinker with.

I‘m 74 and the youngest of all the grandkids on my mom’s side. Her parents survived on their farm through the late 1800’s, 1900’s, and The Depression with a .22 and double barrel 12 gauge.

If shooters only bought what we “need” probably 99% of all guns would go away. We are incredibly fortunate that we live in the most abundant society in history and can afford expensive toys that are actually useless in practical terms. Then again, what practical use are golf clubs, video games, or fishing equipment

The only guns I’ve personally had that were used to the point of used up and worn out were that double barrel and the .22 we had on our farm

How about a pretty full-stock CZ527 in .223 Remington with a Leupold 4x33mm scope? It's solidly a 1-1.5 minute rifle with most bullets/powders/ammo, going to just under MOA with the combinations it really likes. I'll pick one of my AR-15s for shooting long strings of rounds, and I'd grab my .308 first for any serious hunting duties. But the CZ is just too trim and pretty to let go.

Thompson Center Dimension 223 with a Clearidge Ultra XP 6-20x40. Pretty darn ugly IMHO but it fits me well. Only shoots paper targets and is more accurate than I am for sure. It has interchangeable barrels and I have been looking for a 7mm08, 6,5 Creedmoor or even just a 308 barrel to go with it.

For me it’s only purpose is fun at the range, I’m sure it would serve me well if I was an ”operator” or whatever the tactical guys are called nowadays. I just built it for coolness and another host for my registered sear!

I really like this rifle, but it doesn't have a real job. It wants to be a deer rifle or a varmint gun...

...it has a great bloodline.
Maybe someday we will find it's niche. Until then, I'm calling it my pig rifle.
