In our area, we have had a failure of the acorn crop two years in a row. It would not surprise me to learn that we have a shortage of fawns.
As concerning to me, is local reports I'm hearing about late-born fawns, i.e., dropped by does that were clearly not bred until months after the primary rut. Usually this happens when there is a shortage of bucks, but I don't perceive a shortage of bucks....so I don't know what's going on here. But I suspect winter mortality rates will be much higher for late-born fawns.
Another problem which might rear its ugly head here (and for much of the corn belt) this year, is bluetongue. We are very dry here, and so are many other places....deer will be concentrated around perennial streams, bunched up along watercourses, and that situation often leads to bluetongue outbreaks.
