Federal Arms FA91

I was just curious id anyone had any infromation on this HK91 clone? The side of the gun says this:

FA91 .308 CAL.
FEDERAL ARMS CORP.
D.C. INDUSTRIES, INC.
BLOOMINGTON, MN USA

Has anyone ever heard of Federal Arms Corp? Is it a good buy as far as HK91clones go? I found a good deal on one but I have to let the guy know later today.

They went out of business 4 or 5 years ago. This is one of the ones they made with a cast aluminum receiver. The receiver had the advantage of a weaver rail integrated as part of the design. They seemed to work fine - at least they did not have the complaints of the Century rifles. However, they are pretty clunky.

If they are the stamped steel ones, rumor has it that Fed Arms bought Hesse machinery and built them and so they are the same as the old Hesse receivers. That is merely a rumor, of course.

Those tend to suffer from a phenomenon often called, "hard cocking," which sounds plain wrong, but...

On roller HKs, the cocking handle unlocks the bolt as it unfolds. There is a camming action in the first 30 degrees or so. The cocking tube to cocking handle support to bolt carrier extension gap clearance is small to allow this camming action.

The problem is that the receiver is aluminium, so they had to weld the cocking tube to the front sight triple frame, which is steel.

What happens is that the camming action of the cocking handle is set properly when the gun is cold (ie when you inspect it prior to purchase). Then, when you heat up the barrel, that gap grows ever so slightly, but enough to make it very very difficult to open the action with the cocking handle. Or "hard cocking".

Indeed it can be a pain to cock the gun once you've run a mag or three through it.

I have one, and when I upgraded to an SAR-8, found a world of internet trash-talking on them that brought me to purchase several headspace gauges; I found mine had insufficient head space.

I bought a new PTR now, sent one of my aluminum receiver rifles to Springfield Armory (manufacturer) for evaluation.

If you want to buy an FA-91 parts kit, a PTR-91 receiver (with no trunion) and some +4 headrollers we can work a good deal.

There may be a hidden message in all of this.

for the record, my FA-91 did shoot good groups, and I didn't get far enough to kaboom.

I have one. Have not shot it much. Maybe 60 rnds, mostly wolf and surplus. It would not shoot Silver Bear.
I haven't heard much good about these rifles. I'll probably sell mine if I get the proper motivation.

I saw one of those for sale not too long ago for around $400.

Man that is one thick receiver on that sucker, it was too chuncky for my tastes. Of course if you ran out of ammo that thing would make quite a club, don't know how much it weighed but it was a lot.

I urge you DO NOT BUY the FA91. Save your money for a PTR. THE FA91 is a flawed design. Even if the rifle shoots a good group now, over time the rifle (held together in parts by epoxy, due to the impossibility of welding steel to aluminum) will fall apart.

I learned the hard way.

Federal arms Corp.

I noticed some conversation regarding the Federal Arms Corp. 91 receiver and wondered if anyone can tell me how to remove the barrel. It appears it is pinned on, but while one came out easily the other side seems different?

Just picked one up today for short $. Does anyone know where I can find dissassembly instructions? Also looking for a magazine. Does any other magazine interchange? Also a source of parts?

I have done some extensive searches on the web for manuals on the fa91 the closest thing i have found is a g3 manual but it is not close enough g3 mags work in mine but i seriously need to tear mine down i inheareted mine from my father and is showing signs of rust and abuse and its driving me nuts not being able to find a manual for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
