Re: Match-grade primers: They are the same as the corresponding regular primers, except that the quality control in manufacture is tighter. AFAIK, that's the only difference.
I use match-grade primers in my "serious" rifles' ammo. Probably makes no difference, but makes me more confident in the ammo.
/Rant mode: ON/ Re: Federal primers generally: I don't use 'em, and I urge others not to do so, just because Federal packages 'em in such ridiculously oversized boxes. They take up a huge amount of storage space on my reloading-supply shelves.
I talked to a Federal sales rep once about this--He said that the Federal primers were more powerful, so the Gummint makes Federal package the primers as they do. I said if the primers are more powerful, that'd change the ballistics of the rounds loaded with those primers, necessitating a different reloading recipe, would it not? He replied that no, the Federal primers have the same ballistics as any other primers. I asked then how is it that the Federal primers are more powerful, thus requiring the big boxes? The sales rep mumbled something, then got interested in another customer. If that's their attitude, to heck with 'em!!
Has anyone EVER heard of ANY primer(s) which exploded due to the nature of the factory packaging????
