there is a federal ordinance m1 garand for sale at my lgs for 500bucks . they said all the parts are g.i. except for the reciever.Has anyone ever owned one? shot one? I never heard of it before. Is that a good deal? are they any good? thanks for any and all information.

All -GI is a meaningless statement. The question is what condition the rifle and all parts are actually in.

I would not buy an M1 Garand from anyone that could not provide me with DCM or CMP provenances. I also would only buy one with a receiver manufactured by Springfield Armory, Winchester, Harrington & Richardson, International Harvester or Beretta. (for reference, the original GI manufacturers are discussed here: (http://www.scott-duff.com/WhoHowManyWhen.htm)

There are many mixmasters, cobbled together rifles with welded receivers and other specimens worth far less than they are priced. I have bought my Garands (and M2 ball ammo) from CMP (see www.odcmp.com)...their service and reliability as a vendor are impeccable.

Good luck,

FH

...they said all the parts are g.i. except for the reciever.

Well, basically, that is the problem.

In general, cast receivers from Lithgow or CAI or Federal Ordinance should be considered inferior.

A technical inspection from Dean's Gun Restoration or Fulton Armory will usually pronounce these unfit to fire, after they have been gauged by someone who knows his business.

You can get a Garand with a genuine forged receiver from the CMP for $650 or so. They stand behind their sales, too.

No reason to go with anything less, IMO.

Flat Bush and dmazur pretty much hit a homerun. If a M1 Garand receiver isn’t manufactured by one of the manufacture’s listed by Flat Bush, I’m not buying it to start with, no matter how nice the wood or the metal looks like. If you want a real US GI M1 Garand at a fair and reasonable price, then the CMP is the only smart and worthwhile way to go.

I know you can buy a nice M1 Garand from other sources. Chances are high it could be a CMp rifle bought a far lesser price.

Two things to remember with these "mutt" receivers and the "all GI parts" thing;

It is fair to question the degree of wear of the "GI" parts before install.

It is fair to question what was done to the "GI" part to get it to work with the mutt receiver.

Fed Ord and Fed Co have some (a lot) of notoriously bad rifles out there and in my experience, usually aren't worth buying even for parts.

There are certainly folk who have been happy with their mutts but that is their experience with their rifle - or so they say.

Given the alternative of CMP and already circulating DCM & CMP rifles, I'll always pass on a mutt unless I can confirm that once I disassemble it and pitch the receiver, that the remaining parts out value the rifle.

I have a Fed Ord "tanker" built on a GI Springfield receiver. However, I would not buy a Fed Ord receiver. There's no reason to with the CMP around. Pass, IMO.
