I have an opportunity to pick up some Federal 22 LR 40 GR LRN Champion Training ammo at a decent price. I’ve never used it before. I’d be shooting it in a variety of platforms, including a Keltec SU22, P17, a CZ Kadet conversion unit, and a Savage bolt action.

I’m just looking for feedback from anyone who has used it. I don’t want to spend my time at the range clearing FTF’s or FTE’s, which I’ve experienced with other brands.

Thanks!!

I haven’t shot it but I would get it anyway. I’m sure it would work in one of those guns, especially the bolt action. If not, send it to me. ;)

I shot 10K plus rounds of federal champion through my 22/45 from 2008-2012 with zero misfires or malfunctions. I started getting misfires with a more recent batch, but my pistol is acting weird and I get misfires and hangfires and SQUIBS with several types of ammo. So I would buy federal with confidence. IME it’s next to top tier. Top tier non match ammo for me is CCI and Aguila. Bottom tier is Winchester anything and Remington Thunderbolt.

No idea what you mean by training. Federal champion though I believe is same as federal lightning I grew up on. Good bulk ammo and have shot the champion a lot and functions fine in my 10/22's and mrk ii.

Thanks, everyone! I figured anything Federal would be good to go -- but it's nice having some confirmation!

Federal is second only to cci in my mind. Only run 22 lr in revolvers far as hand guns go so of course reliability will be higher but never had an issue and if your 22 doubles for defense sometimes, the 40 grain federal lrn gives a good showing on Luckygunner tests Vs the expensive stuff (relative... It's all expensive or unobtainable now).

Federal went 14 inches from a 4 inch barrel and 12 inches from a 2 inch barrel in those tests. Bested pretty much only by velociters

I’ve shot lots of it through pistols, revolvers and rifles over the course of a few years. I can’t recall anything standing out to stoke a negative reaction; the ammo did what was asked of it to my satisfaction... which is all I can ask for in today’s topsy-turvy environment.

This means Federal Champion .22’s won’t light your world on fire with micro-groups... but it won’t let you down either. ;)

Stay safe.

I've got 2 rifles that really love just about any Federal ammo, and none that hate it. Old Lightnings, Champion, Automatch...doesn't matter. They both shoot all of those better than anything CCI or Aguila I've tried. They both like Eley CMP ammo too, but so does everything else I own. Can't remember ever getting a misfire, hangfire or squib.

I've shot a bunch of it in handguns over the years since I had more of it most times. Don't remember anything negative with them either.

Don't know about the lead RN but the 36gr copper plated Federal in the red box is some of the cleanest running 22 ammo I have shot and it works good too

Are we talking about the 800 round box with a velocity of 1200 FPS? I thought this ammo was just the same as Auto Match which looks identical and also rated at 1200 FPS.

If it’s under ten cent a round and you need it then go for it. In the off chance none will shoot it can always sell it. Given today’s market might make a few cents. Or you could always donate it to boy scouts or some other worthy cause.

All of my guns like Federal ammo. I found a brick of the Champions last week when cleaning my supply closet ( lots of good stuff in there I haven't used in years )

The way ammo is these days if it's a decent price I'd buy all I could get. I haven't had problems with FTF or FTE in my guns but each .22 is a story onto itself.

Good luck.

I shot several cases of it over a course of a couple years. Probably 2010 ish. Got a great deal. Haven't seen a brick (which was 10 blue boxes of 50 with plastic dividers inside another box) since. I had no issues. Nothing spectacular though. I've Wouldnt pay more for it than I would any of the bulk ammo.

The only ammo I've had issue with is golden bullets. And even then it's not enough to stop me from buying it. It's certainly my last choice though.

At the start of covid I ordered a case of aguila super extra that was on sale. I'm very impressed with it. First aguila I ever bought.

I use Federal Champion in my single shot TOZ-35 free pistol. The combination is definitely more accurate than me, and I've never had a failure to fire. I prefer Federal over CCI in this gun because it has a very tight chamber. Federal is less waxy and easier to load.

As others have said, how well certain 22LR ammo runs on a certain semiauto gun is a matter that can be found out only by trying.

No idea what you mean by training. Federal champion though I believe is same as federal lightning I grew up on. Good bulk ammo and have shot the champion a lot and functions fine in my 10/22's and mrk ii.

Federal Champion is standard velocity ammo, Lightning is high velocity.

Yes buy op said Champion Training so I didn't know if that was a name of an ammo. As a side note i havent seen lightning since I was a kid. Looks like champion is just a trademark and you have to go by the number. Looks like 510 is lightning i just don't know if the box says that.
