Cnn reports they think it was a handgun used in the shootings and the range was about 125 yards. They are saying how hard it is to shoot a handgun that distance and the shooter must be exsperianced or profesional. Wanna bet the round used will be reported as a 5.56. Maybe the M855 "cop killer" bullet? They don't let a good crisis go to waste.

Well, I sort of doubt that CNN has any idea what happened in this instance. But, it is possible that an unskilled shooter fired in the direction of the police station from a significant distance and simply got lucky. I lost a coworker in the line of duty a few years ago when a gang member started shooting at a crowd of people and officers from a significant distance (beyond his range of "skill"). Sometimes the bad guys get lucky.

News articles are reporting that the officers were shot from 125 yards, from an elevated vantage point, and that the two officers struck by bullets were in a line of either 40 or 60 (reports vary) other officers in riot gear confronting protestors outside. 'At least 3' shots were fired. My thoughts are that this means the shooter was shooting at the police line, not any specific officers. Also...

The reports say that the shooter used a handgun based on the sound of the shots, as well as the nature of the officers' wounds.

This, IMO, makes it more likely to be a pistol caliber carbine than a carbine caliber pistol.

This. They say the nature of the wounds and the cartridge cases found indicate it was a handgun. Bet is was really something like a HiPoint carbine. That would make such a long shot within reason.

Speculation about speculation. Just adding to the stirring of the pot. Not very helpful. Certainly not breaking news as the CNN report was early this morning.

Crazy good shooting with a pistol at a point target. The officers struck by the fire were part of an area target. Still good (or (un)lucky shooting) but nothing exceptional.

They were both hit high. Doesn't really say much though. We don't even know how many shots were fired. I'll check back on the story in a week or so and find out what really went down.

    Speculation...

I think it's way to early to speculate or pontificate about issues related to the tragic events in that area.
Let's wait until the facts come out & be respectful to the victims(and their families).
Crass jokes and rhetoric does not help the situation.

Speculation for the sake of speculation is pointless and unproductive. The shooting is off topic for THR. If something related to 2A or another attempted ammo ban comes out of this then we can discuss that, if it happens.
