I have never paid for a transfer fee. I bought a handgun from a local Ace Hardware with a gun counter that was on consignment. They wanted to charge me $25 or $35, something like that. The FFL told the cashier no transfer fee because the gun was not a special order, it came right out of their display case with a price clearly marked on it.

I bought a rifle from gunbroker and an FFL about 20 miles away does the transfers for free to active duty personnel. I tried to give him a $20 "tip" but he refused even that.

Education is rarely free. And I must ask.... "Probably ask?" Really?!? Burn me once, shame on you; burn me twice, shame on me.

I will admit, I was rather excited to find the gun I wanted on line. I was even more excited after feeling a little guilty about spending the money, when my wife said she wanted one too.
The store, about 160 mi away, only had two in stock, and I bought them both.
It was a weekend and there was no one I could call to "shop around".
So I just filled in the space with a LGS I've shopped at quite a few times.
Seeing other posts and prices, I guess it wasn't quite robbery, but again,I do think it was a bit userous.
In my book, people can make a lot of money once, or they can make a little many times.
I will be wary next time I think about spending money there.

I'm just happy though to have my firearms. I'm that kinda guy. I'll pay extra to have something now, than wait. Hurrying usually costs somehow.

Yeah, I felt a little bit taken advantage of. I have spent quite a few bucks at this shop. I have a CCW, and he didn't have to make any calls.
The same day I was shopping around and found a new gun store run by a very knowledgeable nice woman.
I might be changing to her shop as my "go to".
What? You didn't do your homework, and now you're blaming the dealer?

My favorite shop is $25 w/ some sort of discount for multiple guns. If they charged more I'd pay it because I like the way they run their operation.

^ I think CA has some asinine mandated transfer fee amount. Don't recall of the top of my head though.

I used to pay 10bucks. Now a days zero. Course I don't transfer new guns that he could just order for me. Mostly out of production or hard to find guns.

$50 is high. Going rate around here is approximately $20. I can get that price from several different FFL's locally. None seem to charge more than $35.

Only exception is one shop that is known to be INCREDIBLY overpriced on everything. Its been several years since I asked them their price so this may have changed, but at the time they wanted $35 PLUS 10% of the sale price of the gun.

My LGS charges me $25 per-occurence, if its 1-gun or 3 it dont matter to him cause
he knows I will be back to get powder, bullets, and other stuff

I pay $10.00.

As a matter of fact, that is is what I paid this morning for the transfer of my new SAM-7 pistol.

$30 > $40 is common in my area. The NICs check goes through TN rather than FBI/ATF and they charge $10 per check. You can do several guns for the same price at the same time.

You need to check ahead of time and you should always contact the dealer prior to having a gun shipped to them for a transfer.

I've seen the whole range here in Washington State.
It does pay to shop around a bit. Several of the shops around here charge more for a handgun than a rifle.
$50 is a bit steep for me too!

I agree that $50 is high and $50 each for two guns transfered at the same time is outright robbery. Consider it a lesson learned. Ask first next time. ;)

Locally, the FFLs in my area charge between $15 and $50. The lower end are mostly kitchen table FFLs, while the high end is the largest full service shop in the area who also sells on-line. I always assumed their high prices were to encorage people to buy directly from them instead of on-line.

You've got a good book there. The same goes for car mechanics, furnace repairmen, and all types of service providers.

transfer fees

$25.00 Bucks is a good price in my area, which is what my FFL charges plus $16.00NICS.most others charge $50.00 to $65.00 per gun plus NICS.yes some even charge tax.
