Finally, at about 4200 rounds , in the middle of shooting the LAPD Metro qualifacation course with 9 popos the S&W 1911PD Gunsite version let me down! The front gold bead 'novak' sight blew off. This caused my score to fall to 435 from 480 the previous run as the sight impact was much to the left for some reason.
I had heard of this happening on Pistolsmith forum previously, but now it am a believer. It ran fine though. I am gonna get a 'real' Novak tritium front sight put in by a top smith to replace it. I also want the big Konenig up grade extractor put in and the barrel crowned to look better, otherwise no complaints. I could get S&W to put a new sight on, but wouldn't trust it and the bead was getting smoked up in a hundred rounds so it was no advantage, and I needed the night sight. S&W does not seem willing to upgrade the gun to the bigger Konenig extractor, nor put on a tritium sight, so I'll take care of my self-as usual!

I don't understand why S&W would do upgrades to aftermarket parts for warranty work? That doesn't make a bit of sense.

I sent the S&W in under warranty for the blown off factory gold bead. I told them 'BTW could you upgrade to nite sights at my expense' they did that and charged me. They also charged me for the extra 2 gen extractor and spring and pin they fitted and returned my old parts. This cost me $90 but they paid the postage both ways!!! Good service , huh?

The extractor is not the larger performance center one because they don't make it for .45acp. It is listed as 'extractor revision 2' on my invoice. I just wanted an extra extractor as a back up, and they won't sell them unless it is fitted by them - aparently. Which seems hokey as it is just a sliver of spring steel?

I can see them adding the upgraded parts and covering the labor while you cover the price of the upgraded parts. Thats pretty much standard. I thought you were implying that Smith should throw in the night sight and extractor for free just for you trouble. While that would be SUPER COOL of them, you don't stay in business by being super cool. I am glad it ended up positively for you. I've bought two M&Ps this month and I plan on getting a S&W revolver soon. I like to hear they are good to deal with if something goes south.
