Finally decided and picked up a Colt 6920. Help with chosing gear please.

Please weigh in or point me to good resources.

Short term needs:

Mags
Oil
Spare parts
Ammo (1/7 barrel)
Sling

Familiar with the platform from the military but I'm no expert.Yes...I'm going to shoot and train. Have an amazing range and local idpa/carbine matches. Got the model with the carry handle due to familiarity with this setup but may equip it later with the following...

Long term wants:

Close up quick optic
Magnified optic 4x or so
Forend/vert grip
Backup rear sight
 
Lots of places to go. I often use Brownells.com, Midwayusa.com, and cheaper than dirt has some good sales sometimes. Although, the actual list of places is almost endless. These 3 however, have been great to work with, fast, and I've never had the first issue. Hope that helps, best of luck. I have one of those Colts too, love shooting it.
 
For mags most are going to recommend the Magpul pmags. I have a mix of those and Brownell's standard aluminum mags with the green followers.

I've tried Frog Lube, Gunzilla, Breakfree, Shooters Choice grease, and Remoil. ,I haven't settled on one as a clear winner yet. The frog lube is more a paste/wax, it cleans and smells really nice. Its my favorite so far but I'm never sure the appropriate amount to use. Seems like it last forever so maybe I'm being too stingy with it.

For a sling I own both the Vickers VCAS and Viking Tactics padded 2 point slings. Each one has its merits, the vtac has the benefit of being able to cinch up tighter against the body if you need to be able to go hands free or to use to stabilize the rifle but the tradeoff is theres a long tail that can get in the way of other gear and obstacles. The vcas is easier to operate but has less adjustability overall. If I had to decide between the two I'd choose the vtac.

As far as optics I have an Eotech at work which I'm not too fond of. Still shooting with irons on my personal rifle and looking to either get an Aimpoint Pro or some kind of 1-4 power illuminated scope. Haven't had the chance to take a look at any in person yet to decide which.

For buis I went with the Troy standard sights. Arbitrary decision because I preferred the metal to plastic and form factor compared to some of the other options.

Don't run a vertical grip but the only one I'd consider is a Grippod with retractable legs if I ever had the need.

Its all my personal opinion so take what you will from it. Most gear choices will depend on your preferences, needs, and shooting style.

I've had good luck with Bravo Company AFA mags and spare parts.
You may have to catch the mags on sale, 'specially Magpuls (their Magpuls often run MSRP), but they often have top level metal mags with the latest followers.
I see they still have good buys on the black Teflon metal mags with enhanced followers.

I have a mix of metal and Magpul - I'm still leery of plastic, 'specially long-term.
I've just Google shopped for Magpul stuff - used to always be able to find someone with 'em on sale (around $9.99 for 30-rd non-window model), but with demand these days, that may be getting tougher?

Last group buy I did, we all gave Weapon Shield a try - everyone seems to be pleased with it.
Cheapest place we found for the big bottles was Watt's Truck Center, but you'd need a group buy to spread the shipping costs.
 
Mobil 1 for me.
P-mags only.
Haven't needed any spare parts and still deciding on a sling.
I prefer Federals American Eagle ammo.
 
Pmags & Colt mags. Those 20 rounders are useful.

Unless you are using your sling as a shooting aid, it need not attach front and rear. If you just want a carry strap, use the supplied nylon sling until you can make a change.

I like Hogue's Monogrip, a lot of guys I shoot with like the Magpul MOE or MIAD grips. (They have a storage compartment built in.)

As for ammo you can shoot anything from 55 to 77 grain.

You aren't looking at a 'target' rifle but with good ammo the Colt will shoot resepecable groups.

I have used a lot of Prvi Partizan M193 5.56 in mine, a lot of PMC .223, and lot of Remington/UMC .223 a few hundred Lake City and Federal M193. Prvi has given me the best accuracy in the 55 gr FMJ ammo. I had really good rgroups with Winchester soft points as well.

I'df avoid SS109/M855 ammo with the steel penetrator, it tends to be pricier, and some ranges won't let you use it. If you are going to shoot a heavier bullet get into match grade ammo rather than M855.

4x is plenty of scope for shooting steel out to 450 yards or so.

Spare parts - long list, but start with just a spare bolt and firing pin and that will cover 90%
Ammo (1/7 barrel) - it's not sub-moa, but prvi m193 is what i use.
Sling - blueforcegear or vtac 2-point sling

Long term wants:

Close up quick optic
Magnified optic 4x or so - try a 1-4x variable
Forend/vert grip - skip it
Backup rear sight - i don't use them anymore, but i like the magpul ones

I doubt the gun shop added 'em - how much were they?
If you'll check the Bravo Company link in my earlier post, their enhanced followers are Magpul. I see they have a 10-pack of metal black Teflon mags with enhanced followers now for $99.99 - not too shabby! My local shop is still asking way too much for metal mags with old followers.

I already had a bunch of metal mags - I bought a 50 pack of the latest generation Magpul followers off eBay and replaced all mine.

I recently picked up some spare bolt parts at Bravo Company-some I probably don't need (like gas rings, retaing pins etc), but they were so cheap I figured I might as well toss 'em in there and put 'em in bolt spare parts bag.

You probably already know this?, but here's a document I made when doing research before replacing all my old followers.

AFA ammo, I have 'bout as much luck with Federal 100-rd Value Packs at Walmart ($39.95). I never had much luck pricing bulk stuff after paying shipping, but there do seem to be some deals popping up lately?

I run with a Blue Force Gear Vickers sling, Aimpoint, Tango Down stubby foregrip, and a Surefire light. If you want something a little cheaper, the Streamlights should do anything you want them too. As far as mags, Pmags or the D&H from Bravo should do good things. Yes, the metal mags feed lips do eventually crack, but usually after thousands of rounds. My backup sight is either an LMT A2 style or a Daniel Defense sight. I run with my backups always up and a 1/3 cowitness because it is easier to transition than with a fold down. For oil, I still run CLP, but a lot of guys run Slip and really like it. For ammo, I usually run whatever cheap 55 gr is available, but I'm looking into the civilian equivalent of Mk262 - the Black Hills 77 gr MHP. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet though.
 
Thanks for the follower doc. I was into AR rifles about ten years ago and a lot has changed so I'm relearning.

Was surprised at the price of 556 ammo. Small bullets, super common round. Why so expensive? Almost as bad as 308 ammo. I'm not really interested in shooting Russian stuff to save money though.

What's the best brass ammo to stock up on? Have local store w m855 and m193 for reasonable prices.

For a foregrip and light do I need to replace the handguards (I have the stock ones).

I finally added my first rail system a little over a year ago - had a spare AR I decided to turn into a HD gun. I went with a Midwest Industries drop-in - they seemed to get good reviews, and I didn't want the expense / hassle of a free-floater, plus for HD a free-floater sounds like a bit of overkill? Think my rail was $109?
I thought about the rails made to fit to OEM round handguards, but I was pulling my hair out trying to find a model that would fit my handguards, and the makers I contacted just sent form letters (couldn't get any of 'em to simply tell me what the C to C distance of their mounting holes were).
I got tired of trying to pry info out of 'em, and just went with the Midwest Industries drop-in.

This was also my first AR with a VFG (I have one of the Grip-pods), but I wanted a light, and I wasn't willing to shell out the big bux for a Surefire.
I took a chance and went with the SIG Stoplite - it hasn't been put through the ringer (I did beat on it quite a bit), but for the money and for a HD gun? I think I got it for around $179, and while it may not (or it may?) be as tough as a Surefire, it's hard to find a Surefire for under $600?
The controls on the SIG Stoplite aren't quite ready for primetime - the quick access buttons are OK, but the buttons to change modes are not - I just have my light set for on only when the button is pushed, since for HD I assume I'm going to want light on / light off.

On my other ARs sans rails, I got a bayonet lug mount and mounted an Insight light on it.

Yeah, none of it is the pricey stuff, but it works for me!

Sweet gun, I got one last month. For optics I got an Eotech 512 as I like to have nice optics on every gun I own. My carbine came with all te Magpul stuff and I don't see a need to add anything else.

You don't have to if you don't want an entire rail system. Just buy sections of rail like this from magpul or other makers and you can install them on the standard handguards, usually under the heatshield through the vent holes.

You might look at Magpul's angled foregrip rather than a traditional T style grip, a lot of our competitors use them.
 
One other suggestion is to get at least one 10 round mag if you don't have one. 20's and 30's are great for obvious reasons, but if you do some bench shooting with sand bags or anything, a short mag is really nice. You'll find yourself trying to zero your sights or glass, or just seeing how far you'll be accurate, and it's nice to not always be banging the damn mag on the bench.
