Finally done!! (Mostly.)

I finally finished my SHTF/HD/Load across the handlebars of the ATV for coyotes rifle.

Started with a Yugo SKS, added the Tapco compliance kit. I put on the Tech Sight, and had to file about 3mm off of the stock behind the receiver for it to fit. (The instructions say that you can take it on and off and it will return to zero, but I don't plan on finding out. I'll spray it out with gunscrubber, let it dry, oil it, and call it good.) Beware that putting on the SAW grip makes the trigger group semi-permanent. (You have to unscrew the handle to get the trigger group out again.) I had to have a friend put it in a barrel vise to get the grenade launcher orr, then I screwed the muzzle brake on with some blue loc-tite, it seems to be holding fine so far. The barrel shroud and op-rod housing needed a gunsmith to take the ferrule off and mount it on the new composite one. (At least, someone who was more of a gunsmith than I am.) The hard part was to get the old rear sight off. It took me and a big guy at Impact to hold the leaf spring down to pop it out. The replacement pin slides in easily, and stays snug with the push rod and spring in place under it.

Next steps, more 20 rd mags, probably cut off the grenade launcher sight, (I'm fresh out of Russian rifle grenades) and Duracoat ACU pattern. (I'll test the process on some lesser Han Solos before I perfect the process and reset the chamber for the real Luke Skywalker. I may be offering friends the service as well to justify the setup cost.

I shot it before I was able to get the old sight off, which was weird, trying to look through both of them, and it was certainly more consistent. When I went to Impact to get them to help me with the rear sight today, they had some silver bear ammo, and I snagged several boxes. I'll try to get to the range this week to zero it and learn where to aim for CQB as well.

(On a related note, the guys at Impact said that they are definitely getting over the ammo shortage, the wait is down to weeks instead of months, and they have stuff in the warehouse they haven't had for months. They also had stacks of Colt and RRA ARs on sale.)

The Tech Sights

I finally got it to the range, and started shooting to dial it in. 50 yards was a bit too far to get it on the paper, so I brought it back to 25. Ok, no problem, used the A-1 style windage to bring it to canter, then I started messing with the elevation......and I bottomed it out. Still 2 inches high at 25 yards. I guess I'll have to start messing with the front sight, although I was hoping I could do it all with the tech sight. I'm thinking I will need to move the elevation adjustment on the Tech Sight back up to give myself some room to work with. Is there any reason this isn't the best way to do it?

Also, should I get it out to 50 and 100 yards and see if that inch or two arcs itself out at longer ranges?

When I bought my Tech Sights I also bought the front post from them. The front post is taller which made it easier to get sighted in initially. As a plus it is thinner as well which helps a lot with accuracy.

As for what distance to sight in, I would recommend 20 yards as that would put you dead on at 200 yards, (about 3 inches high at 80-130 yards) perfect for this round. I have shot some mighty fine groups with this setup on my Yugo SKS.

Good idea. I just ordered the replacement front sight post, the front sight tool, and the rear sight combination tool for $17.95. I'll install, shoot some more, and report.

How do the 20 round mags work with that setup? I've been thinking about converting but wasn't sure if it would be worth it unless the mags are reliable.

On a separate note, I used firesights on my yugo. The rear hood lines up identical with the front hood. As long as I see one hood, I know I'm aiming righ.

The mags have been flawless for a few hundred rounds. I did finally get a couple of stovepipes when it got hot and dirty. (I might have cleaned it once since stripping off the cosmo.) I hosed it out with some carb cleaner, let it dry, and lubed it up with a little 5W-30 synthetic. I plan on stocking up on the mags.

Just read above, everything is not exactly 'drop in', and I did require a bit of gunsmithing. It's a pain, but it's good when you're done.

Your SKS is a beauty.

If I could find a used SKS beater, I would retro fit it out but my Norinco SKS was bought NIB, in mid 90's and is in mint condition. The problem with putting aftermarket stocks on a SKS is many time you will end up breaking the barrel cover wood furniture because it's hard to tap out the hold pin, unless you really have the tools and a bench to work at.
