Finally got a rimfire!

Went to Sportsman's Warehouse today, and a Ruger 10/22 followed me home. Store didn't have any .22, but I'm at least half way to fun plinking. Is there any specific ammo that they seem to like, or hate? I've heard CCI Minimags are pretty ok to shoot, but I've heard that some .22 doesn't seem to cycle semi-autos too well.

 

My 10-22 works great with Winchester Super X, never had a single issue with them. However I have a large amount of Remington shells that have a tendency to jam. You will enjoy it for sure, nothing like plinking with a 22.

 

I had a problem with my 10/22 cycling subsonic ammo (Wolf MT, SK Std +, and Eley) when it was new. Fed Auto Match runs and shoots good.

 

CCI miimags are a good ammo in most 22 rifles. To get the best out of it it is trial and error. Run 400 to 500 thru it then look for better ammo. Rugers are not none for great accuracy when stock so not sure what you expect. If you can say'n with open sight check out tec sights or atleast a Williams peep sight setup Longer sight radius always helps .

Everything about it is stock, I don't plan to try to tune it to shoot tiny groups or anything. Just wanna shoot pop cans, maybe some squirrels, and let my lady shoot it, she doesn't like the recoil of my AR or shotgun.
What prices should I be looking for?

 

My 10/22 is also all stock except for a 2-7x BSA in Weaver rings. It's a nice plinker/squirrel gun. CCI mini-mags work well in it but for general all around use I went with CCI Blazers for economy. Among the lower priced 22LR stuff my 10/22 seems to prefer Blazers so luckily I stocked up on them a few years ago. Haven't seen any in a while and when/if I do I wonder what they will cost? I'd recommend trying them in a 10/22 as an alternative to some of the pricier target stuff as they have been pretty darn good for all around use in some other rifles also.

My 10/22 likes CCI Minimags very well. It also likes the hollow point Federals that come in the 550 count packages almost as well, it does tend to hiccup with these a bit more than the Minimags.

22 rimfire ammo is pretty dirty burning stuff by definition. It does not hurt to clean the gun fairly often to keep it feeding well, often feeding problems with a 10/22 can be traced to a dirty gun. You should have gotten take down instructions in the manual with the gun. You may not want to take it down far enough to take the bolt out, putting the bolt back in can be tricky. At the very least, buy a bristle brush, or even an old tooth brush, and give the feed area of the barrel a good scrubbing with Hoppes #9 or something similar if it starts to hang up. And you need to clean the feed area of the magazines every once in a while too, they can gum up fouling after a while.

Finally, in case you don't know this, only run 22 Long Rifle ammo through it. I was at the range one time and a newbie was cursing at his new 10/22 because it kept jamming. Turns out he was trying to shoot 22 Longs through it, which the dummy at the dealer had sold him along with the gun.

 

Thanks for the advice everyone! Looks like Minimags, Winchester Super-X, and Federal Auto-Match are the way to go. I saw some auto-match on gunbot.net for $54 for a box of 325. Is that a good price?
I wouldn't worry about the weapon jamming due to it being dirty, I typically clean them after each range session.

 

I wouldn't touch it at that price. When it on the shelf at walmart it goes for under $20.

 

Great little .22. Fun and easy to work on. You can't go wrong with the 10/22.

 

The LGS and the place I got it both didn't have any .22, but I'm going to go to the local wally world here in a couple hours and will check there as well.

 

I have a stock .22 as well, except for the $10 Tasco scope. Better than nothing!

Mine likes the Federal Champion Bulk pack ammo from Walmart that comes in 550 count boxes when they actually have it. As for reliability, it's been flawless. Not so with Winchester Wildcat or Remington Thunderbolt. Semi autos are pretty individualistic when it comes to what ammo it likes.

 

Any high velocity ammo will work fine. I would put anything but cheap stuff in a 10/22.

 

I like CCI and Fiocchi.

Shot just about every cheap .22 ammo made, those two have been the least problematic.

The Thunderbolt and Wildcats don't work well in the High standard, or the AR-7, but functioned fine in the pump-action Remington from a turn of the century Carnival shooting gallery.

It seems that each .22 is it's own beast about what it likes to eat. You could have the next serial number to your gun in hand & it'll most likely shoot better with a completely different ammo than what yours will like. Half the fun is finding out what any given gun wants to shoot though. Don't get too wrapped up in the accuracy thing, otherwise your bank account will suffer. If your gun won't seem to shoot anything, buy another guy's take-off barrel before you spend real money on an aftermarket barrel. You should be able to buy a take-off for about five or ten bucks and there's a lot of them out there.

Money is better spent on some trigger upgrades than a new barrel IMHO, and I've been around 10/22's for awhile.

Congratulations on the new 10/22. This is an excellent rifle.
These days ammo is ammo and I have ran just about all the inexpensive stuff through several different 10/22s. Bad ammo is bad ammo regardless of the gun you use it in. CCI is always good but I don't care so much for HV ammo for the most part.
For hunting cans and killing time Remington thunderbolt is usually fine. My favorite is CCI SV. Never had a failure. Ever. Ran about 125 rounds of it through a 10/22 last weekend and groups were from 1/2"- 1" at 50 yards. I prefer it to cost ~0.06 per round but have paid $0.07 per round recently.

 

I just found some Federal Auto Match on Cablea's for $.06 per round and jumped on it. Just gotta wait for it to come in the mail

 

On a sidenote, that is about all I ever shoot. I love my 22s.
