Finally got my long range rifle!!!

Those that have been folowing my posts have known that I have been looking get a long ranged rifle to hunt my friends mile long peanut feild. Well I finnaly found one. I am now the proud owner of a savage 11 in 270 WSM. I did not know they even built them with the iron sights anymore. I was looking for a TC Venture in 270 win but they made me an offer I could not refuse. Now I just need a good scope, I am kinna leaning to the Nikon buckmaster/monarch with the BDC or the Bushnell 3200/4200 with the DOA rectical, but nobody around here has them. Does anyone have any other recomendations for a long range (400-500 yd) scope? I don't mind spending good money for a quality product.

thumbs up for bushnell. I have the 6500, but the 4200 is a real nice scope as well.

I have a pic on the way, my phone is kinna slow at sending pics. I have had lower level Bushnells in the past and have always liked them, even their cheap scopes are really good. However the Nikon Prostaff on my Tikka is super nice I really like the BDC and it is as bright as can be, so I would not be opposed to either one of those brands. Sadly everyone is sold out of Buckmasters and 3200/4200s this close to hunting season

Some stores have been having the Nikon Monarch on sale for $199. That's a good deal for that scope. The other scope to look for is the Vortex Vipers that are on clearance. I'd go for one of those over a Bushnell. I have a Bushnell 3200, and it's just not really been that impressive. It's a decent scope, but I've not been impressed when comparing it to other offers in that price range.

OK I cannot say I have seen any Vortex Vipers around here (South Alabama), but mabey I can order one. Do they have anything like the BDC or DOA rectical? I know that is kinna newfangled mumbo jumbo but I have it on my tikka and I really like it It might not be a must have, I don't think I will fighting alot of bullet drop at 3300+fps aprox 24" @500yd. The local gun store wants $450 for a 3x9 Monarch I told them they can keep it for that kinna money.

Yep, they have a BDC reticle in some of them. I'm not sure if many of the clearance ones have it or not. Check out Cameralandny.com for them or SWFA.com

Dicks Sporting Goods had a Nikon Monarch UCC ( I think it was UCC) 3-9x40 on sale last week for $199 as did Gander Mountain. I'm not sure if any where has it on sale this week. I think some online sites may have it for that price too, but I will have to check for you.

Well, I looked at SWFA and that scope is $299 this week. I thought it was cheaper last week, but might not have been. I'd check and see if you can find somewhere that has it onsale this week.

I have Nikons and Bushy 4200. If I was going to shoot LONG shots, I'd go with the Elite 6500. The 30mm tube adds a bit of performance and their DOA reticle is nice, but that's just me

Something like this: http://www.bushnell.com/products/scopes/riflescopes/elite6500/652164B/ 2.5 to 16X is a very useful range for what you are describing. 42mm objective allows you to mount it low and that should help with cheek weld.

Well my idea of a long shot is not nearly as long as some people shoot. The longest shot I have ever taken was right at 300 yards, but to hunt a wide open feild like this one I might have to step that up to 400-500, still a chip shot for some very experenced shoothers but new teratory for me. South Alabama is dense with brush, most deer are taken well within 75 yds so the availability of good long range gear is slim here.

Even 300 yards is a long ways for most people to be shooting at a critter under the rules and ethics we adhere to. Placing a round under realistic hunting conditions with the accuracy to ensure a clean hit and a quick, ethical kill from a field position does require some practice. Not everybody should be attempting even 300 yard shots. Stepping up to 400+ is exponentially more difficult. I am absolutely not of the mindset there is a set range that nobody has a reason or moral responsibility not to shoot at. Far from it. But people need to be aware of their own limitations, and I think most will admit that 400 yards is a bit of a long shot for them under these conditions.

Now if we're discussing shooting steel, or paper, or zombies...no, 300 yards isn't all that far.

Either way, I would think a properly loaded and sighted .270 WSM would be capable of a respectable amount of range. It should do fine for you.

I would not attempt such shots if I were not an experenced shooter. My 100 yard grouping with my old Savage was one semi-smooth hole in the bulls eye just using a sandbag, so I think I am a pretty good shot if my equipment is up to par. I just hope the extra recoil from the WSM won't throw me off, but according to recoil calculators it is only about 10% more then my old 270 win. And less then my old 7mm rem mag (no recoil pad OUCH). I hope to get at leased three range days in before the season starts.

Does anyone have any experence with Redfeild scopes. The local Bass Pro has a huge selection of them.
