Picked up my Pedersoli Trapdoor carbine today. I've always admired the Trapdoor and I'm really looking forward to shooting it.

I have dies and am waiting for my lee 405 grain mould to arrive.

Brass is a bit hard to find but thankfully a friend has come through with a couple dozen.

I have some gongs to torture.

I don't shoot black powder and I am trying not to go down that path (I have enough irons in the fire) but this thing screams for it.

Oh man! You gotta load BP for your 45-70. Otherwise there will be a disturbance in the force. There’s nothing quite like the sound, smell and gentle push of a blackpowder 45-70 being sent down range. It stirs the soul. Congratulations on your new rifle.

It’s a fun cartridge for sure. I don’t shoot BP out of my Marlins, but out of a trapdoor like yours it just seems so right .

Acme makes some heavyweight coated lead bullets if you ever want to try a 450 or 500 gr bullet out of your rifle :).

Stay safe.

According to Steven P Garbe and Mike Venturion black powder can be more accurate than smokeless, especially at long distance. Check out their book "Black Powder Cartridge Reloading Primer" the 9th edition.

Congratulations on a fine rifle and caliber.

I have bought and sold dozens of the Springfield Single Shot Rifle, still have two. One is a common 1873 rifle, the other is a sporterized 1866. I hunt with the 1866. I agree that at least the originals shine with black powder and lead bullets. (They also work well with black powder and jacketed bullets.) I don’t recall an affinity for the carbines but they shot well enough.

Paul Matthews, “40 Years with the 45-70” and Spence Wolf’s “Loading Cartridges for the Original 45-70 Springfield Rifle & Carbine” are two books I would recommend.

don,t hot rod it, it will kill every thing here in the states with original 45-70 loads. and bp will be easy to clean up in the trapdoor.

I had an original Trapdoor Carbine, before I got into reloading.

Factory 405g loads in the lighter gun kind of beat me up, couldn’t get through a full box off the bench.

Good luck with your new gun!

I have a bunch of brass from Hornady lever evolution rounds. They're a littl shorter to accommodate a spritzer bullet. All once fired and clean. If you can use them and want to pay shipping I'll send them to you.

Thanks for the offer. I have plenty of brass. Maybe someone else here can use them.

There is a reason that the Army developed a carbine load for the cavalry. I believe it was/is 55gr of black powder with a card filler and a 405 grain bullet.
I have one of those repro carbines and it is fun to shoot. (With the "carbine" loads that is..)

Yeah, if I were to do it now it would be a reduced load of powder with a muzzle loader ball of the correct dimension.
