Finally shot the IDPA qualifier!

So did my wife. She ended up firmly entrenched in Novice. I managed to get MM in SSR and SSP, not bad considering I've only had my SSP pistol for a couple of weeks.. and I shot SSR late in the day (spent most of the day helping run the match).

I was soo close to SS... Actually shot SS when my wife and I setup the qualifier match to try it out ;-(

Oh well, I'll be ready for the next qualifier!
 
Nice work for a first classifier.

You are a better shot than I (I was about middle of MM in SSP 2 months ago, I hope to be knocking on the SS door soon). Any takeaways/impressions?

I actually shot SS in SSP when my wife and I setup the classifier at our local club......

..but......


Here's the one thing I got from this.. SLOW DOWN! Particularly on stage 3 (20yd shootin'). When I shot SSR it was late in the day and I was pretty shagged out, I ended up shooting crummy on Stage 1/2 and did fairly well on 3!

We'll be running another classifier later this year, I'll get SS in that one ;-) (ack..jinx!)
 
I'm just a SS myself. I've only shot in one classifier. However there is one this Saturday. Fingers crossed. Good shooting Braindead.
 
I shot my first classifier the other day too. I would have nailed SS (ESP) except, somehow, rounds had managed to evaporate out of my spare mags...twice...in some sort of bizarre twilight zone parallel universe thing. I ended up doing a couple extra slide-lock reloads in the middle of the 3rd stage strings. I would have reshot the string, but it was pouring rain, dark and cold and everyone was itchin' to get out of there so i just shrugged and called it a day.

I'm still trying to find the guy who shortloaded my magazines... :D

My local group will shoot a classifier this weekend.

As I'm new to practical competition shooting, how is the classifier stage set up?
 
You may not have time to do this, but.. Printing each stages strings onto index cards with underlining for important points (load 3 rounds only) may be a big help..

We tried doing it with the rulebook, and it's a bit hard to follow. I've got a word doc that prints cards onto Avery 4 up postcard paper, hasn't been proof read yet though.

Just seems like it would be much easier on the S.O.'s to have a small stack of cards formatted nicely.....
 
I still don't get the point of doing tac loads on the clock...but hey, there it is.

I agree with you about the "tactical" reload being of limited use in an actual gunfight.

I believe that it falls under more of the "gaming" aspect of the sport of IDPA. So to do well at the game, one needs to practice it.

I disagree, there can come a time when you have an opportunity to reload even though you may have 3 or 4 rounds in your magazine. It would be stupid to drop that part full magazine, or to not take the opportunity to top up your firearm.

I believe Massad Ayoob recounts a couple of real world examples in 'Stressfire' of the need to retain part full magazines.

Now, if you're simply questioning the tac load vs reload with retention (which the Classifier allows in both cases, you can do either) well that's a different story.
 
Congratulations! My only qualifier was back in February. I made MM with my Glock that I had shot exactly 3 times before. I looking forward to going for ESP and CDP this time around.

I want that 4 gun award. Even if it's just Marksman, you know?:)
 
The 4-gun thing isn't really an 'award'.. and you have to pay to get on the IDPA website...sheesh..

We had two folks complete 4-gun MM classification last shoot.

Still a Sharp Shooter!

I screwed up big time. Started out crappy, and it didn't get much better. 131. Pathetic. Dropped multiple head shots. Dropped multiple shots on the 1st string of the 3rd stage. 35 seconds worth of dropped points!!!!!!!

Sad thing is I ran through in an unoffical practice classifier a week ago and ran a 108. Which would have put me at Expert.

Oh well, everybody has crappy days. Slow down. Chill out. Go do it again.

On the bright side I shot in a team match (rifle/shotgun) that afternoon and my team (Jack Straw and I) won. Good thing for me that 3 gun has 2 guns in it that aren't pistols. :)

My wife and I tried the classifier the day before! And I managed SS (close to EX), but when the 'real' pressure hit.. I muffed it ;-)

My wife on de other hand improved by about 10 seconds overall.
