Funny I just picked up their 2007 catalogue and really like the stainless. in the .44 Rem Mag. I am also looking for a good and nice lever action. It would be nice to bring along one handgun and one rifle in the same caliber.

A gun that can be used for Varmint Hunting would not be good for Deer hunting, and Vice Versa.
 
OK, so this was supposed to be a fun poll. I have a 30-30 and a 35 for deer or bear... I was just wondering which people would choose if they had a choice of a new awesome Marlin... The 45/70 is an amazing round and a hoot to shoot. But I would like a fun smaller round gun too...

Well, the .44 offers a few things...

Hot .44 Magnum is a powerful enough round from a 20" barrel.

You can share it with a revolver.

It's readily available and not too expensive.

I'd vote for the 94SS. And a Super Blackhawk in stainless, 5.5" barrel to keep it company, with a holster and a cartridge belt.

Stainless is more "fun" in the field because it requires less care. Blue is nice, but trashed blue is not.:)
 
I hope to buy a 1895 Cowboy in 45-70 sometime this year. Its a very cool looking gun IMO and I should be able to hunt whatever I please with it.

+1 for the modern cowboy , but for the traditionalist a 45LC SAA (or clone) and a 45-70

Do you reload? I would highly suggest it with either rifle you can save big on 44, and 45-70 is a no brainer, you can probably pay for a decent lee setup after only a couple hundred rounds.
 
I voted for the 45/70 because it's a caliber I dont have, and want (I'm a really bad caliber whore...). I also need a levergun since I dont have one, so when I do, I'll be getting the 45/70 to kill 2 birds with one stone.
 
I have several variants in 45-70. Standard 1895, Guide Gun, and 1895 Cowboy. My 1894 cowboy in 44 mag is far more fun to shoot, and a lot easier on the shoulder.

You can do anything in North America with it...

PMC makes cowboy loads for lightweight shooting if you don't reload...otherwise you can use Trailboss to make some serious powder puff loads....then turn around and get some real hammers for the bigger critters...factory loads from Winchester, Federal and Remington are all good for black bear, hogs and deer...

I voted 1894 in .44 magnum.

I already have the 1895G "Guide Gun" and the 1895 CB "Cowboy".

I'd go for the 1894CB, actually. There's just 'something' about those octagonal barrels!
 
1894 SS .44, cause that is what I did get! :D

I got it for pretty much the same reasons you stated. Mostly as a fun gun, but could also be handy for home defense, plinking and some hunting. I hand load so the cost of special or magnum loads is no worse than a .45 acp.

I would like to get a .45-70 some day, but I got the .44 first as it is more versatile. I also got stainless steel because I plan to hand this down at least a couple of generations. I like it!
