I've checked the NRA listings and google, and have had no luck finding a range within a suitable distance (45 minutes, my car cant handle too many long drives). I live in Syracuse NY, and just moved off campus and dropped some stuff off at my new apartment (most importantly, a Ruger 77/22, which I've been waiting ages to shoot) but I cant find any local ranges. I spent the summer up in the Adirondacks and someone had mentioned that they shoot on some state land up there, and I was wondering how that works. Can you shoot on any state land(obviously not all of it, but the parks and open areas and stuff?) Is anyone here from the Syracuse area, or familiar with NY state laws pertaining to where you can shoot? Thanks for the help guys.

If you don't get a response here stop by a local gun shop. They should be able to tell you where the good public places to shoot are and what local clubs you might want to look into joining. Some of the hunting/shooting clubs in Eastern NY require nothing more than $10 a year dues and you get full access to the club range. The better clubs require a current member to sponsor you and cost more and take more time to get full member privileges.

I did a quick search at 411.com for Gun Clubs in Syracuse and turned up:

Thanks, I'll ask around when I'm back in town.

The list you gave me might help, I didnt have my truck up there until this year so I didnt go far from campus, and I'm not familiar with many of the nearby towns. The NRA listing just gave a list of everything in NY, I just didnt recognize those names, I'll have to get out my map and see how far they are.
