Can anyone think of good examples of safety and/or shooting instruction (especially with kids) in lit or pop culture?

Examples are not intended to replace instruction.

I'm looking for authentic portrayals to serve as another tool to counter liberal criticism of teaching kids about guns. I'm interested in the old and new. It would be nice to show historical consistency.

"The Shootist" includes a little scene of instruction where JW's character explains why he only loads five chambers.

"Shane" also includes a scene where the main character teaches the child, but my memory is fuzzy.

Most of them tend to be pretty absurd. In "El Dorado" for example JW "teaches" James Caan by having him shoot wildly at a cactus.

I also remember a scene where Bosniacs are being taught to shoot in "Shot through the Heart"--a film about snipers in the Bosnian war. The scene emphasized that they had no idea how to shoot and made them more fuzzy than the evil Serbs. I suspect in real life they all knew how to shoot pretty well thanks to Tito.

Enemy At The Gate. Just for the sniper scenes, much of the rest is horseapples.

I agree, most scenes seem to be written by someone who is is not particularly well-trained or practiced. Or likely methodical instruction would be one of the first things cut by producers and publishers seeking mass appeal.

Any good scenes are probably short, with good practices implied ...

    I'll check out Shane again.
