im sure this one has been beaten to the bush so if you can point the way to the discussion mucj obligue. im looking at buying my first 1911, i was looking at kimbers because that seems to be the 1911, is there any other 1911's just as good with out as big of a price tag.i dont mind paying for the kimber name but would rather get something of equal quality cheaper and have more money for brass.

Dont do it they are addictive.:neener:

I love my Kimber and you can find series I Kimbers in great shape for under
$600. I would steer clear of the external extractor series II models imho.

I would look at the Springfield, Taurus and S&W 1911s as well.

Springfields are nice and I love the GI / Mil spec as a cost effective starter. Don't negelect a Colt, A Colt is always the right answer.

Paying for the Kimber name?????

Man you haven't been studying enough! Kimber is one of the bargains of the 1911 world! They are not the cheapest, but they are some of the highest quality that remain at reasonable prices. Kimber reinvented the manufacturing process for 1911's and it enables them to produce what used to be considered custom guns for standard prices.

While I certainly do not begrudge a man for loving Colt or Springfield or any number of other manufacturers, I firmly believe Kimber is a bargain - you get great quality for a good price.

I have 2 in .45 (and a few others). One full size stainless target match and one Pro CDP. They are more accurate than any other standard factory 1911 I have shot. Sure I have shot more accurate guns, but they were either custom guns or small shop guns like Wilson or Baer and cost several times what the Kimbers cost. If I wanted or needed another that is the first brand I would look at.

If you want to pay for a name, go shopping on those two last guys' shops and get a little sticker shock!

I really love my Taurus. I've shot 250 rounds of mixed ammo no problems. Very nice piece. Shot 117gr aquila IQ, blazer, and ranger 230gr +p of the stuff I remember.
I'll pay $1000+ for a 1911 after I get an AR, .50 BMG, .308, etc.

for the love of god! DO NOT BUY A KIMBER!!! I was just at the local gun shop and a guy was looking at them vs the springfield, I told him to take a closer look at the gun, like any of them, or all of them. EVERY single kimber had RUST on the barrel, fitting was horrible, tool marks everywhere, mag would not drop out. And this on a $1000 gun?!?

There was recently a post about new kimbers and had pictures, something like 100 reasons not to buy a kimber.

Go with Springfield, they make the best 1911's for the money IMHO right now.

"The" 1911 is a Colt. Everything else is a copy. You will find more complaints here about Kimber than any other 1911 manufacturer. Springfield, Rock Island Armory, Taurus and Smith & Wesson all make more affordable models with basically good reviews.

Do a keyword search for 1911 - there are lots of these threads in the last few months.

Also try the 1911 forum - it's more specific to what you are looking for, and everyone over there owns one

Well, of course there's going to be more complaints about Kimbers. They make so many more 1911 pistols than all other manufacturers combined, that the complaints are going to be exponentially more, as well as the number of satisfied customers.

That said, I love my Kimber and my S&W and my Colt 1911's, and my shootin' pard, as well as another friend, love their Taurus 1911's.

I've know many folks who wouldn't own anything other than a Kimber, but these were 'earlier' models of say 5 or more years ago. I don't have any personal experience with Kimber, but I have a LOT of experience with Springfield and S&W 1911's. I love them both. I WILL NOT part with my SA subcompact, nor my S&W 1911SC (now called the PD). Price point versus performance and dependability was/is always my 'deal breaker'. When we were at the range, my fullsize $700 Springfield Loaded would do everything my buddy's $1200 Kimber would. Bargain or bust? You decide. Same goes for my S&W, but with a bit bigger price tag due to the Scandium frame. Performance and dependability should ALWAYS be priority one in a defensive firearm (handgun or rifle). But, why pay extra for the same quality unless it's the name you really want. In some cases, that's what you're buying. S&W makes the frames for some high-end 1911 assemblers.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to get off topic, or start a war, it just seems that the last time I saw that comment, it said KelTec instead of Kimber.

I thought it was worth a smile.

Thanks

It should not matter if a company makes one or one million pistols.

If they are concerned about the product it should go out the door RIGHT. I own Colts and SA's. I have looked at Kimbers several times and never impressed enough to buy.
SA can get a GI model out the door and it is RIGHT. I paid 800+ for my last Colt custom shop 70's series and it is RIGHT. Letting your customers do your QC for you is not the mark of a quality company or product.

Kimber forced the market to start producing quality 1911's at a decent price. But, since the series II and external extractor they have not kept up with the quality aspect of the product.

markbo, i have been studing them but there not to much that sets them aside from other 1911's. one thing that was pointed out to me at the local gun shop was the feeding lip. kimber's have the feeding lip as part of the barrel, were as others have the the barrel and around were it sits machined and polish which from what i was told makes for less jams in the long run and smoother action. i dunno know thats why im askin. i shot my buddies s&w 1911pd and with 8 rounds i put a half dollar size whole in the target. so like i said the 1911 it self is a very accurate and relaible pistol other wise the goverment wouldn't have kept them in service for 50 years and still most agencies go back to them. i just wanted to know if there was anything out that compared to the kimber name.

yeah my computer screwed when posting so i canceled and resubmited not knowing the first still wen threw.

I just recently bought a High Standard 1911 for $420. They are made by Armscor and are the same as the Rock Island 1911's. I can recommend it %100.

If you're seriously thinking about a Kimber, you need to read this information before you make a decision. It's long, but there's a HUGE amount of relevant info you'll want to consider.

The short of it: Kimber quality as of late is horrible. The top gunsmiths (Vickers, Yam, Lau, Hackthorn) all say to avoid them. It's one thing to get too wrapped up in internet hoopla, but when these men speak about 1911's - you should probably listen.

There's a lot out there that exceeds the "Kimber name".

You would be far better off with a S&W, Dan Wesson, Springfield or even Taurus.

is there any other 1911's just as good with out as big of a price tag.
I have two Springfields & a Dan Wesson and they've been great, both less expensive than the Kimbers. Some might even say they're better than the Kimbers. I have two Kimbers as well and love them both, but I don't necessarily think the Kimber's worth ~$150 more than any other comparable 1911.
