First AR

Been doing research on how to pin the mag, (hate ny rules) I know no one wants to go on record on how to do it but my thoughts are to drill and tap both sides of the receiver and install a set screw thus locking the mag in place. Thoughts?

For your first AR I would buy prebuilt. Then for your next one I would look at building. If you are new to ARs you need to buy one and shoot it so you can figure out what you are really looking for in your rifle.

Let us know how it shoots. It looks very similar to my PA-15, which isn’t exactly a tack driver, but has been very reliable. I have talked to other PA-15 owners who have had better results than me. Maybe they are just better shooters?

I think the NY restrictions only apply to rifles capable to taking a detachable magazine. Once he pins, by NY’s definition, it cannot be an assault weapon and he can as many features as he pleases :)
Any semi auto, it was a rule before the safe act. Think rimfire are exempt but can't remember since they keep changing the rules on us.

To give full disclosure on my PSA rifle, the picture I posted earlier was with hand loads and not factory ammo. I tried half a dozen brands of factory ammo and the best was about two inches consistently. The load in the picture shoots like that repeatedly. Change to the wrong loads and that rifle opens up to about 4” at 100. I tried some factory brands that wouldn’t stay on an 8” target at 200 yards.

Oh good. I’m not the only one coloring case heads with a Sharpie. FWIW my PSAs generally prefer heavier bullet weights like 75 or 77 grain bullets. Lighter bullets shoot pretty well but the heavier ones do better.

I remembered some more factory info. There is one and only one factory load that shoots nearly as good as my hand loads. It’s the Frontier 55 grain 223 FMJ load, not the 5.56 load. These shoot well in a 5.56 chambering oddly.

I just ordered a batch of those today to pair with a new powder and some CCI 41 primers I found on one of my reloading scavenger hunts. Just to be sure we weren’t separated at birth, are you using Shooters World AR Plus? A local scavenger hunt turned up a store with about 10 bottles of that and about 50 pounds of other SW powders.

Also, is that a PSA premium FN upper or a standard nitride one? I’ve had good experiences with both

Nice, the upper is forged 7075-T6, I'm testing re15 and IMR 4064, if I don't find a good load with those I will try H4895, those are my in stock powders that I can find data for, had planned on trying IMR 3031 (i have 6 pounds if this) but I can't find data for using that with anything over 63 grain bullets.

I'm trying rmr 69 grain bthp, very good price.
I have had good results with that bullet and 24.0 gr of Shooters World Precision Rifle powder. Just finished loading up 50 rounds each with 4 different primers to see if any one shows better results. Maybe test on Friday once the weather warms up.

If you're happy to spend $500 on an optic I'd suggest an Aimpoint Pro or Trijicon MRO and for the rifle get a BCM. You could probably get that setup pretty easily for $1300-$1500ish which would give you some left over for a nice sling, backup irons or even a QD/F2S Magnifier, etc..... would be one heck of a set up.

ETA: made my suggestion after only having read OP, after reading thread looks like OP made his choice, nice AR man. My condolence on the NY bs....glad you got it sorted

Look into the Prince 50 Designs ar15 mag lock. I have used it on several ny builds .I was questioned at a gun club a few weeks ago and the range officer who is a local officer said it was good to go!
