I'm looking at FFP scopes to use on a couple high power rifles. I came across a FFP with mildot reticle and MOA turrets. I would prefer mil/mil, or even moa/moa. Does the mil/MOA combo defeat the FFP benefits, or just make it "different" ?

A mil reticle with moa turrets is pointless even with SFP but is really worthless in FFP. Let's say you take a shot and you spot your hit 1 mil low at 500 yards and you want to dial to be on target. Off the top of your head how many clicks will you have to dial up with your 1/4 MOA turret to get one mil? Now if you were 1 mil low with 1/10 mil turrets how many clicks? See it's much easier!

Get a mil/mil or moa/moa scope and don't even bother with mismatched turrets/reticles! Weaver makes a decent mil/mil scope sold at Midway for a great price. Also Look At the Vortex Viper PST line available in FFP mil/mil and Moa/moa. What is your budget? I'd buy the best scope you can afford because with glass buy once cry once is the absolute truth. I just wish I would have figured that out before spending money on garbage only to have to upgrade and spend even more.

I really like the Vipers but that's not in my budget right now. The scope I'm looking at is a Hakko that's made in Japan for about half the Vipers price. I've heard they are high quality. It even has 60 moa adjustment. I just don't care for the mil/moa combo.

Would getting the turrets replaced with mil dot adjustment be an option ? What is the standard procedure for using the mil/moa setup ? I know the click adj. would not match the reticle. 1 click adjustment would be 1/4 moa, would equal (?)mil at 100 yards. Since it is FFP, wouldn't the variation be constant through all powers ?

I'm not sure if this combo should be a deal breaker for a (new) good quality scope for a good price. What do you think ?

Basically your options if you are using the reticle to spot shots at all is to bust out the calculator or pen/paper and do the conversion formulas to get your adjustments in moa.

I've never heard of the Hakko so I can not attest to th e quality. I do know someone with the Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x that sells for $300 on midway and is mil/mil and it's been a good scope for him. Personally I would pass as I would never own another scope with mismatched turrets and reticle. I'd save my money and get the best glass you can afford. Then again I'm a big time optics snob and really only shoot at distance so my needs may be different than yours. If it's a plinker rifle for average distances 100-300 any scope that holds zero should work okay for you. It is your money and only you can decide how to spend it.

The SWFA SS scopes are definitely a great value. You can't go wrong with one of them either. The Bushnell elite tactical line is pretty good too and they can be had for a good price as well.
