First Handload Deer!

Hey, none of us place a shot perfectly every time for one reason or another, the main thing is you didn't lose the animal and it didn't suffer. Even if you lose a little meat there is still plenty for the freezer! I have never used SST bullets, do you recommend them?

So far so good with the SSTs. It expanded adequately with around an inch sized exit going through bone in the process. I did not recover any lead or jacket in the deer. Some of the reviews I read about the SST lead me to believe I could expect the bullet to leave some fragments behind but it looks like that didn't happen here and it expanded nicely on its way through. Pretty much everything you want a hunting bullet to do, it did.

I'm happy with it and the load behind it. A member here was kind enough to pay the bullets forward so I had to do some looking around to figure out what they were. Red tip, cannelured, with evenly placed score marks running down the bullet from just below the tip to just above the canelure. I have a few 140 gr bullets as well but can't think up a reason to get away from the 130 gr.

The Hornaday 130 SST's are a great bullet in the 270. I do prefer the Sierra Grand Slam 130's in both my 270's but that is just personal preference. They are all DRT on a whitetail IMHO. Good deer.

Frogo207, the grand slam bullet is made by Speer, anyway, I too took a doe this year with my own reload. I was more excited with the shot than getting my first deer of the season.
