I have just arrived here in Washington,U.S Army, and never hunted with a bolt action rifle just shotgun , I have a buddy trying to set up a shotgun slug hunt which is great, but I bought this new savage bolt action 110 in 30-06 for hunting some of the big game I have heard about in this state, hunting with bolt action I assume is very different from shotgun, any advice in getting into some big game up here, thanks hooah

And everything else Justsay just said . . . practice -- dumb as it sounds, you'll want to adjust to the extended range/flatter trajectory difference. When you get "that shot," you don't want to botch it & trigger-time is the key. I'd recommend 150 or 165 grain bullets foe a good all-around deer & elk choice. Zero 1 1/2" high at 100 yards & you'll be "on" out to 250 & around 5" - 6" low at 300 yards. Enjoy the hunt!

The Savage 110 has a reputation as an extremely accurate rifle, as long as you *Squeeze* the trigger you should be fine.

Figure out the area in which you'll be hunting, and try to get out there on weekends and just sit and watch, around first light in the morning and then late in the afternoon/evening toward dark.
Try to find some reading material about identifying game trails and feeding and bedding areas. You can wander around during mid-day to try to find those.

Also, there are so many hunters out during modern rifle season in WA state that finding a good spot & sitting (letting others move the game around) is a good tactic. If you're hunting on the wet side of the state, be prepared for thick cover.
