Hey everyone!Starting off..I'd like to say,I love every thing from the MG-42 to the Dillon!Although I have to admit..my collection is small!As far as small arms go when the SHTF what rifle would everyone got to?I know this is probably been over a 1000(or maybe 10,000) times.I have an Arsenal AK,Bushie M4 and a SA M1.All are reliable.But what would you choose?

Welcome

The biggest shtf event I've been in was NOLA post katrina.

If I had to do it again I would go small. maybe an underfolder AK stuff in a paper bag.

NOLA = New Orleans, Louisiana.

BTW, welcome to THR. This thread might get locked by the mods (though I'm not going to report it) because we usually get a TON of "what would you do if SHTF" threads, but you're new, so it's not a big deal. :)

But to go with the thread - I've never been in any sort of disaster, but if I were, and if I were able to, I'd grab at least one handgun, and one rifle plus whatever extra mags I could easily stow on my person and carry for each. Add a jug or two of water and some sort of food bar or beef jerky, and that'd be about itinitially. After the event is over, I'd try to go back and pick up anything else I might need.

Unless one is bugging in I would go with something small and concealable.
for me that would be the piece I carry daily, a S&W 9mm and a spare 16 round standard capacity mag.

Hi Bigretic,

I'm new to here myself but you'll find a lot of useful info here. Personally I grew up with a shotgun (winchester speed pump 12 gauge with 20 in. barrel) and feel fine to use that for basic home defense and in a mild shtf scenario say the ice storms last year of hurricane aftermath where there isn't a huge risk of double digit badguys. In a south central riot or Katrina type situation I would go to my sks or ak depending on which one my girl grabbed first. I would also have my GLOCK on my hip with a couple extra magazines. This is of course once I move out of NYC and into Pennsylvania (about 4 more months)

My Mark III 22/45. I realize it's only a .22 but it's the only handgun I can shoot reliably. I'm working up to that .357 that I want, but I can't control it yet, so I'll stick with the .22LR.

Maybe some shoes.

:) That's what I like. Serious replies I can file away for future reference in my old age.

I'm sure the new member will appreciate the generally high standards found here and will ignore any flip remarks I occasionally make.

I'm not keeping score, but I think I try to provide helpful information more often than I throw a jab...

From what I've seen (and I'm a newcomer, too), both seem to be tolerated, as long as nobody is mean-spirited.

Essentials:

M1A;
any side arm with a caliber beginning in ".4...";
drinking water;
sardines and saltines; and
a fistful of cigars.

And maybe some 'Deep Woods Off'.

m4 bushie in a discreet bag, 2 beta mags in the pack. glock 17 concealed. with 3/33round mags in the pack.

SHTF rifle: something light, small and concealed. Maybe a keltec su-16 Kel tec or something like that. And about 200 rounds of ammo on stripper clips for fast loading. A good backpack, a small reliable pistol with about 50 rounds, some food, and some good shoes.

But if I had to choose from your list: m4. If you have to encounter the police, military, other shtf people you will probably share ammo between you. 223 is also light, high powered and can kill everything from small dogs to small elk. More importantly have a plan and stick with it and use your head. Recommend picking up the SAS survival handbook, excellent read.
