Responded to a thread in the General Gun Discussion forum "What Do You Want for Christmas" ?

Never have shot or owned a flintlock. Built a CVA percussion rifle KY, PA style in the late '70's and had a hoot with it, used a friends TC Hawken cap lock and enjoyed that too !

Would like some hands on info on kit's or guns, have 4 requirements, cost not over $ 700.00, flintlock, 45 or 50 cal. Know that's a tough row to hoe.

Are there any used dealers out there ?

All info is greatly appreciated !

Probably can get a Lyman Great Plains for around that, or look on some of the BP forums for used guns. Depend on how authentic or period correct you want it although I can't imagine wanting a non-period correct flintlock.

Location? Looks like southern Indiana. How far from Friendship? During the fall shoot there are lots of people there who would help you out, even let you try a shot with a flinter. Local gun clubs may have a blackpowder group who would be more than happy to help you out. Many kits out there to choose from depending on how much work you want to do. Simplest is the Lyman GPR in flintlock 50 cal which will be way below your ceiling of $700.
An example of a kit requiring more work would be

You should have no trouble finding a used Thompson/Center Renegade flintlock rifle in your price range. T/C are some of the best flint rifles on the market. They were "THE" company for quality BP rifles back in the 1970's and 1980's, in the years BI (before inlines).

Greetings
There are many good used flinters for sale under $700.
Gunbroker has numerous used flinters for sale.
If you serach for Flintlock rifle kits you will find bunches available.
Traditional Muzzleloader Forum is a wealth of information covering evry aspect of flinetr usage.
Flinters are easy to use if you understand the basics. A quality lock with a good hardened frizzen will last a lifetime and serve you well.

I agree completely with the above but there is also TVM who makes a great flinter with excellent components, barrel, lock and trigger(s) and their kits are right around your price range. I don't know if you know this or not but tuning and shooting a flinter is a whole nuther ball game.

Here is there web-site.

Good Luck on whatever you decide on.:)

Want to thank all !

Friendship is right up the road (70 miles), that may be the place.
I've considered the Great Plains and TC, they seem to have a good rep'.
I do like the PA, KY,TN types.

From what research I've done so far I agree that the lock is THE make or break item for a flinter.

The TC and Lyman are excellent choices!! I have one of Lyman's revolvers that haven't been sold for quite awhile and while its somewhat finicky about the load it likes, ain't they all, she is a real brute when it comes to reliability and durability.:)

Probably can get a Lyman Great Plains for around that,
MidwayUSA has the Lyman flintlock kits listed for less than $500 and fully assembled guns less than $650.

Cabela's has several Pedersoli full-stock flintlocks listed on their website. AFAIK they are all finished guns, but it looks like they are still less than your $700 price limit.

One word of warning, when you first fire one, make sure there is a lot of room downrange! When I fired my brother's I discovered (to my sorrow) that I had a serious flinch problem. The pan fired, I flinched, the main charge went off and the ball went WAY over the target!

I got a nice Cabela Kentucky flintlock rifle for half price from their Bargain Cave. Super nice rifle and fun to shoot. I had a bit of a learning curve, but now I am getting fast reliable ignition. The gun is accurate, from bench. Off hand I am still working on my groups.
