FN handguns....any good?

I can't do a search on "FN" because the search requires 3 characters. So I have to post a thread.

I see CDNN is selling the FN HP-DAO 9mm compact for $279 brand new. Seems like a great price. I want a reasonably inexpensive 9mm DAO auto to teach my wife about semi-auto handguns. Seem like this would be perfect. But, I don't won't something that is junk and prone to be unreliable.

Are FN handguns any good? I sure like the looks.

The only company that I could consider myself "brand loyal" to is FN. IMO, they are among the best of the best.

I have the HPDAc in DA/SA - it is the finest handgun I have had the pleasure of handling. I wouldn't personally get the DAO model, but that's me. If you search my posts, you'll find a bit more on it.

I wouldn't normally go for the DAO model either, but I am thinking that it would be a little safer and easier for the wife to learn to operate a semi-auto coming from years with a revolver. One less thing to think about since the trigger is the same every shot.

Here is a picture of my recently acquired fullsize FN HP-DA:



I got it NIB from CDNN Investments for $350. This is my first experience with an FN product, and I must say I am extremely impressed. Inside and out, the pistol absolutely reeks of quality, with attention to detail usually found on a gun twice as expensive. Accuracy is more than adequate: with my 9mm handloads and shooting offhand, this pistol is capable of keeping all shots within a 3" circle at 20 yards.

CDNN's closeout pricing on these fine pistols is the real icing on the cake. Based on my positive experience with the HP-DA, I just ordered an FN Hi-Power SFS Mk. III 40S&W from them.

Got my FN HP-DAO yesterday. Could be one of the nicest guns I've handled. And it is certainly to best feeling gun in the hand I've handled, including any of my 1911's. Just feels "right".

BTW, I just noticed something different in the FN models. I kept looking at that DA picture thinking something was different from my FN SA and couldn't place.

Then it hit me, the trigger guard is rounded on FN's SA and blocked on all other models.

At the time I ordered it, CDNN was including only one 10-rounder with the HP-DA. About a week after I received the pistol, CDNN started offering the same pistol with one 10-rounder and one 15-rounder. I called them to see if I could obtain a 15-rounder at a reduced price since I had just purchased the pistol; they mailed me a 15-rounder at no charge (it's the one shown in the image).

Then it hit me, the trigger guard is rounded on FN's SA and blocked on all other models.

Appearance-wise, note also that the "ridge" towards the front of the slide, where it narrows, is angled. The ridge on your SA is vertical.

Internally, the DA and SA models are completely different.

My FN

I own a FN Hi-Power that was made in 1935. 95%+blue finish and shoots like it was made yesterday. When JM Browning died, FN finished his design and brought it to market in 1935...so I have one of the first ones made...

Got the Compact just like pictured above at the top of the thread. I couldn't be happier with the apparent quality of it. Haven't shot it yet, but I fully expect it to be nice. I should also add that this is the nicest feeling handgun I've held. Ergonomically superior to anything I own and that includes several 1911's, Sigs, Glocks, XD's, so on and so forth.....
