Qiuck question on these guns:

Does the Scar use a piston driven system or DI?

Also have the same question with the Masada, is this piston driven or DI?

Don't know much about the SCAR, but the Bushmaster ACR, f/k/a Magpul Masada, utilizes the AR18 short stroke piston design. Should be released in the 2d quarter of 2008

Come check out the FN Forum if ya wanna talk about the SCAR - www.fnforum.net

Many people are anxious to get their hands on the 2 SCAR versions. They will be available for civilians by the end of the year.

Both are piston designs.

They will be available for civilians by the end of the year.

Is that still looking likely? Military fielding on the SCAR is still quite behind schedule, and I was under the impression that getting caught up on those orders was the hold up on the civilian version.

I really want the FN, but if its in customer hands before the end of the year... I will be very surprised.

I'm at a loss as to which of the designs coming out right now will be better- XCR, ACR, SCAR- specifically in terms of what the civvie rifle will be like, and if we'll ever get to see it.

The XCR is the only one in production now for civvies, and while it is seemingly very good, it has some drawbacks as compared to the others (heavy, they have yet to really support the multicaliber/multibarrel capability, the stock ergos are, allegedly, less than ideal) that make me wonder if it's worth it just to wait. OTOH, the possibility of AWB II just screams "buy it while you can".

I dunno.

The XCR's downsides to me are:

1) Factory trigger sucks, fixable today with $50 aftermarket trigger job, and RA states they are designing a new more match-like trigger.

2) Ejector is bolted in; I wish it was permanently mounted. There are plenty of options for addressing this yourself if you want, for very cheap.

3) Rail height over cheekweld with the factory folder is different from an AR, so most standard AR mounts put the optics a little high. This can be fixed today by either getting a CTR stock with a cheek piece, or getting lower than standard optics mounts. RA states they are also working on their own SCAR spec multi-adjustable stock.

Weight? Don't see that as a problem. It feels equal or lighter than an AR with a rail system to me.

Remainder of the ergos? Selector is just like an AR except it only rotates about half as far from safe to fire... Mag catch is exactly the same... bolt catch is very similar to FAL, but is less of a reach, and ambi. It is very fast. I don't know what part of the ergonomics anyone would have a problem with.

Caliber conversions? 6.8SPC kits are in customer hands right now. RA states that 7.62x39 and 6.5 Grendel are in production now, and the main holdup at this point is waiting on subcontracted barrel production. RA states they plan to move barrel production in house so they have more control over the entire barrel situation in the future. You can place your order for any of the conversions on RA's website right now.

FN, last I heard, states that they plan no caliber conversions. ACR, I guess it will be up to Bushmaster if they do them or not. I haven't seen any statements one way or the other.

If the SCAR and the ACR don't offer caliber conversions (either from the manufacturer or aftermarket), that is a HUGE portion of "the whole point" that will be missed. And I mean huge. Gifreakinnormous. Massive.

Quick change barrels are nice. Folding stocks are nice. Integral rails are nice. Relocated charging handles are nice. None of that, however, makes me want to jump on-board the _*_AR bandwagon, though, when the AR-15 can already do so much, and I already have sunk costs in the system. What makes the next generation designs really shine is all of that combined with multiple calibers. If I'm stuck with .223 only, I see no reason to drop so much coin on the new sweetness.

Yeah, it's a little chunky, but it's not bad. I have no idea how the ACR and SCAR will weigh in, either, so it might well be a non-issue.

when I referenced the stock ergos, I was thinking of the cheek-height issue. I agree that you can work around it.

Note I said "fully support" the caliber conversion capability. They are just now starting to do that. That's not a slam on RA, either...these things take time. It's just a statement of fact that they have yet to offer much in the line of multiple calibers, though they are starting to do so.

Any word on 1:7 or 1:8 barrels?

Ah, yes, I agree... just wanted to get the current state of things out there for those who don't read the XCR forum. I hope to see them come to full fruition. I think I'd be on board for at least one conversion, as well as the trigger and stock if/when they are released.

There are some 1:8 barrels floating around out there already, but as far as I know they are not in production currently and can't be ordered new at this time... looks like you'd have to talk one of the current owners into giving his up. I have not heard about any plans for a 1:7. Seems like people have shot up through 75gr though the 1:9's with good results in limited reports, though I don't know how widespread use of that ammo has actually been in the XCR. I agree more barrel options would always be nice.
