FNC or Galil?

I have been working along time and now have enough money for a preban .223. I like poodle shooters and already have an AR-15, and am looking for something exotic. I've narrowed it down to the FNC and Galil. Does anybody have any experience with these rifles and what are the pros and cons of both?
 
Both guns are nice, but the Galil is better......it basically works like an AK (both the AR and ARM), they are extremely reliable. The parts are a bit easier to get for the Galil than the FNC.

FNCs main problem is firing pin breakage, but you can get replacement pins without issue (it used to be a problem, but not much anymore).

I sold my 100% NIB FNC last year.....you can see it below. Definitely regret selling it to this day.

Thanks for the repy JG. That is a very beautiful rifle. I've heard of the firing pin problem with FNC, but I also heard its built like a tank. Did you like the trigger pull on the gun, I've read its about 11lbs?

How well do ar15 mags work in the FNC? This would be a plus so I wouldn't have to buy Galil mags and the extra money could go for ammo.

And if anyone who has a Galil how are the pre-ban magazines that DSArms or Tactical Weapons sell work?

No problem at all :cool:

Good AR15 mags fit fine in an FNC, you don't need FN mags. It is a big plus for the rifle, not to mention if you ever wanted to have it converted to full auto....I believe there are still a fair number of auto sears out there (always nice to have the option).

Remember, the pre ban mags sold at DSArms are .223, not sure how good they are.

Original Galil .308 mags are a fortune (range from $80-$125 depending on condition).

Trigger pull wasn't bad, its not that light, but assuming I shot the gun I don't think trigger pull would have been an issue.

I onwed several of both at one time or another..look at it this way:

1. Reliability...both have AK type rotating bolts. The Galil is more classically an AK and thus seems more reliable in terms of dirt etc. It is also heavier.

2. Parts..Galil parts are easier to find. FNCs can use AR 15 mags and they are cheaper.

3. Accuracy..the FNC wins this one hands down.

4. Coolness factor...even IMHO

5. Weight...the FNC is far easier to lug aroound.

I know a few things about the FNC, Mainly downsides but i love the rifle, it is one of the best looking guns out there, amyways, it has not last round bolt hold open, the mag well is not beveled, the barrel is not replaceable (it is welded) and parts are hard to find, but it still is a very good rifle.
 
I was checking out AIM Surplus' other closeout items after my .303 ammo buying binge and it looks like they have a pre-ban IMI Galil .223 with folding stock and a coupla mags for $3195. I have no idea if this price is good or not, (being in Kali, we're not allowed to have the good stuff). Here's the link if anyone is interested:

If class 3 appeals to you, the FNC might be the better choice. I've read there's more registered full-auto FNC sears than FNC's in the US. Apparently the guy that registered them all will convert your FNC to a MG for around $2k.
 
Have you considered a Valmet 76 folder in .223? It's a highly refined AK, as is the Galil, and it tends to be less expensive. I prefer the look. Cost may be a fair piece less, as low as $1200.
 
Thanks for all the info guys. So far I'm gonna choose the FNC as the winner.

Not only does it take AR mags but the class 3 aspects that JG and CleverNickname said got big points. I don't know how the assault weapon ban is going to end up, but I doubt any new machineguns are gonna be available for us mortals.

Sactown: that seems a little high for a Galil, I've been able to find one that was going for $1800.

El Tejon: Send me an email about the FNC. I haven't found one yet but that's what I'm going for.

Destructo6: I thought about the Valmet but mags are kind of hard to find for those.

All in all it was the full auto that sold me. :evil:
 
I own both. Grab the FNC.

The Galil was supposed to be a cross between the AK and the FAL resulting in a more accurate AK. In reality they just made a heavier more expensive AK.

Reason #1 NOT to buy a Galil - They BLOW UP.

I was right next to my buddy when his Galil .308 ARM went off. The firing pin has NO spring inside the bolt. This means when you get one granule of sand or enough powder residue to wedge that pin in the forward position you WILL get a slam fire and a KABOOM.

This is not a matter of if but when.

The FNC is better made, more accurate and probably every bit as reliable. The Galil has a bottle opener and the FNC doesn,'t so remember to bring your own. :D
 
another48hrs- I've handled El Tejon's FNC. It seriously looks brand new.
 
Hi, funny thing happened to me today. I walked into this gunshop in town and started talking to the clerk and I mentioned the FNC and he went on about how it was a POS. He told me about extraction problems and yadda yadda... then told me about AR-15s. Was what this guy was saying true or was he just trying to sell me an AR-15, because he happened to have a whole wrack of them?
 
Hmm, I dont know, Usally FNCs are more expensive then AR15 so I dont understand why he would try to trick you, mabye he has heaard bad things about fnc's mabye he is thinking of the FN CAL, a similar eariler rifle that had many problems
