Folding stock in ny

I acquired a romanian ak of which the gun store customer remarked that it was "formerly owned by the cia" which I think makes it a cia model? I want to change up a few parts including the foregrip and stock but I am not sure if I can modify the stock the way I would like.

I want to add a wire folding stock but i am not sure about the legality of this and none of the local people i know who own guns can tell if it is legal to do.

I am not very knowledgeable of all of the gun laws but I do believe it has to be a "preban". i am not sure if my gun is or how to tell. The only thing i have found about new york state gun laws is this http://www.nysrpa.org/nygunlaws.htm but it has done little to help answer my question.

if anyone could enlighten me about this issue i would be most appreciative as i don't want to modify my ak in an illegal manner

I was of the impression that New York still had a state AWB,m rendering it illegal for you to have a folding stock or other such evil features. In fact, I would presume that the rifle you just acquired would have had to be manufactured prior to 1994 in order to be legal in NY.

only legal if gun and new stock are pre-ban and then you may still get hasseled. Proving it falls on you.
I live in NYC/NYS and i would not do it.
If you do it - keep it in house - restore to origianal condition when taking it outside.

By the way - the Romanian AK is probably made by CAI, not CIA.

is there any way to check to see if my rifle is built prior to 1994?

if i cant confirm the age i am sure i will just add the ris to the front end and leave the stock be.

If you can't verify the age, you might wanna go back to whomever you acquired this weapon and un-do the deal. Being a New York state resident and holding an AK that was made after 1994 does not sound like a good combination.

Read the name on the side of the AK and Google that name. That should give you the contact info needed to call them and ask them to look up the S/N for a build date.

Well i bought the gun from a fairly large local gun store so i dont think it would be a legality issue but i never asked about the age of it as it was my first gun and i picked it up a year ago.

The possibility that it could be illegal though is very worry some

I will go back to the buffalo gun center and see if they can clear that issue up but since its been over a year i dont know if they will have the record or not. I really hope my first gun purchase was not one with a legal issue

I know what it says right on the side of my gun off of the top of my head. It has "romanian ak47", next line says "wasr-10". I will have to look to see if there is a number to verify the age on google.

If it's a WASR, then it's made by Century Arms.

Before you go back to the gun store, you need to get smarter on the NY state AWB. I'm sorry that I can't help much more, but I live in Texas and am simply not familiar with the NY gun laws.

Sadly, many gun shops aren't overwhelmingly smart in regards to some nuances of the law, either. You will need to do your own research.

Update:

I contacted the local gun store but they said it was made post 1994 but it is also in compliance with new york state state gun laws because it doesnt have other features like the threaded barrel and such. They said they still have them for sale and even pointed out some they had for sale.

This is all very confusing. I am going to go pick up a book about gun laws over the weekend and do some research into this because it seems you guys are saying one thing and the gun dealers are saying another.

If it's a wasr 10, whether single or double stack, it's definately post ban. You cannot have a combination of the following two:Folding/coll stock; pistol grip; bayonet lug; grenade launcher; flash suppressor.
